Olson left his resigna- tion when he left for the weston a vacation, with the assurance that it would not be accepted, and when he arrived home he found that he was minus a job, and consequently he intimates that there will be merry war. The cabinet gives it out that Johnson will name his successor without aid or advice from John Lind, who is said to be responsible for his dismissal. Politics mixed up in selecting educators for any insti- tution of learning does not tend to the selection of the best—for the school. The Wadena Pioneer-Journal says of Thomas Shevlin and his philan- thropy: “Tom Shevlin, the Minneapolis lumberman, one of the richest men inthe Northwest, by the way, has given an additional contribution to the state university. His donation this time is a check for $60,000, part of it to be used to enlarge the Alice Shevlin memorial hall, erected sev- eral years ago by him at an expendi- ture of something like $100,000. Even though the tariff upon lumber has been lowered a little, we are told that Tom’s financial condition causes no worriment to himself and friends.” CAUSTIC COMMENT. (A. G. WA (% L T o sl U PO A G LABOR DISPUTE IS SETTLED Miners of Pittsburg District Will Re- turn to Work. > Pittsburg, Sept. 3.—The dispute be- tween the miners and operators of the Pittsburg district affecting 18,000 men, 7,000 of whom have been on strike for over a week, was settled at a confer- ence between the opcrators and the national executive board members of the United Mine Workers of America, with ‘Natlonal President Thomas L. Lewis of the organization. A notice will be_posted in all the mines in this district.telling the min- ers that the recent order of the coal companies that black powder must be aised in mining coal is rescinded for the present.
