He is improving rapidly and expects to be as robust and chipper as ever in a few days. C. C. Potter, a member of the firm of C. H. Johnson & Co., con- tractors at Fargo, N. D., was a visitor in the city yesterday. Mr. Potter was looking for carpenters for work which his firm has in Fargo. He stated that there was a great shortage of men who use the hammer and the saw, and he came here for the purpose of securing some skilled men, if possible. He met with but little success, as there is considerable building being done in Bemidji these days. IN KANSAS LIQUOR RAID Austrian Women Resist Officers, but Are Finally Subdued. Pittsburg, Kan., Aug. 2—In a Hg- uor raid at Radley Assistant Attorney General John Marshall and Sheriff Merriwether were resisted by a num- ber of Austrian women. After a live- ly fight, during which stones were thrown and the officers were clubbed, the women were subdued and the lig- uors destroyed. 'This is the second time recently that women at Radley have fought of- ficers who were making raids in an at- tempt to enforce the prohibition laws. FALLIERES WELCOMES CZAR Russian Ruler Arrives at Cherbourg, France. Cherbourg, Aug. 2—A French naval division, consisting of the armored cruisers Marseillalse, Admiral Aube Gueydon and’ twelve torpedo boat de- stroyers, under command of Admiral Aubert, met the Russian squadron ac- companying the imperial yacht Stand- ort, which has the Russian imperial family on board, off Cape Grisnez and escorted it here. President Fallieres, on board the cruiser Galllee, met the Russian warships at the entrance to the roadstead, where he went on board the Standart and extended to the Russian emperor and empress the French welcome. The president, with thetr majesties, then returned to the Galllee and the brillfant sea procession steamed into the harbor amid the booming of guns from the ships and forts. WRECKED BY AN EXPLOSION 8everal Persons Buried In Rulns of Building. 8t. Paul, Aug. 2—A building on Third street near the Central police statlon was wrecked by an explosion. Beveral persons were injured and a number are reported missing. Mrs. Mary Hoen resided in the up- per story of the buflding. She was blown into the street and badly man- gled. Her nlece, Romie Duska of High- ‘wood, who was visiting her, and two other children and two machinists are missing. ‘W. B. Rowan, police alarm signal operator, was seriously injured. Dr. John Kelley was hurt, but not badly. FIVE HUNDRED DEAD _IN MEXICAN QUAKE Number of Towns Completely Destroyed in Disaster. City of Mexico, Aug. 2—From ev- ery railroad station in Mexico City the government is dispatching supplies to the cities and towns devastated by the earthquake, Temporary shelter is being arranged through the military departments and detachments of troops are leaving for several of the stricken towns where reports indi- cated that disorders are threatened in the aftermath of the earthquake. Incoming reports raised the death toll to 500. Five towns were com- plotely destroyed and a number of others partially wrecked. The more widely spread havoc was wrought in the states of Nuevo Leon and Guerrero. The towns of Chilpan- oingo, Chilapa, Conception, Fetilia and Coatepec were nearly obliterated. Fire followed in the wake of the earthquake in Chilapa. It {8 known soores were crushed to death by fall- ing wallg and were later consumed in the burning ruins.
