| THE BEMIDJI DAILY PIONEER PPUBLISHED EVERY AFTERNOON BY THE BEMIDJI PIONEER PUBLISHING CO. C. J. PRYOR. C. E. CARSON. Entored In the Postoffice at Bemidjl, Minnesota, as second class matter. -$5.00 PER YEAR IN ADVANGE SUBSCRIPTION: BROWER AND THE GOVERNOHSHlP.’ The Maynard News is working overtime to bring Representative Bjorge of tonnage tax fame into prominence as a gubernatorial can- didate. If the tonnage tax measure is an indication of the man’s calibre, it is a cinch that northern Minne- sota doesn’t want him. The Republicans are determined to elect their candidate in 1910 and they fully realize that in order to do so they must present a candidate who will meet the approval of the party without any especial contest for the nomination. Bob Dunn’s friends are busy for the grand old war-horse, but Mr. Dunn remains silent on the queStion. Doubtless he would enter the contest if tendered the nomination by a re- united party. Ripley Brower of St. Cloud seems to be a general favorite, and it is freely predicted that he could be elected without much trouble. The Eberhart boom appears to be on the decline for some reason or other.— Akeley Herald-Tribune. This talk of Brower being a can- didate for governor is probably a repetition of the “rumors” indulged in two years ago, when the talk began from a source which was never traced, but was believed to have been quietly started by certain persons interested in democratic success at the polls; and it was necessary for Brower to come out and announce that he had no inten- tion whatever of ever becoming a candidate for governor. It looks like the same line of talk this year, and it is just possible that it origin- ally came from the same source, in order to “mix” the republicans again and cause them to become dissatis- fied and create strife and dissension. Brower’s law practice at St. Cloud 1s of such proportions that he would think twice before entering a strenu- ous gubernatorial race under condi- tions such as prevail at this time, CAUSTIC COMMENT. LA. G. Rutledge.] Justice Brewer must have felt at home in Milwaukee. The town of Fairview, S. D., pro- hibits the playing of baseball within its limits. Misnamed, that town. If the duties are taken off hides, oil and iron, won’t that White House spread go down into history as the one great big “free lunch? » Residents of a fashionable Chicago suburb, wearied by crowing roosters, declare that the entire neighborhood is one vast poultry yard. Colored homeseekers will probably be tempted to make their pilgrimage in that direction, The reason given why the Bible and Shakespeare were omitted from Dr. Eliot’s five-foot library is that “most people have read the Bible and Shakespeare.” There are prob- ably many persons who could stand a second reading without danger of going stale. ENGLISH MINERS VOTE FOR GENERAL STRIKE Wil Support Scotch Brethren in Thelr Fight. London, July 29.—Balloting by the members of the Miners’ Confederation of Great Britaln to decide whether o1 not a national strike should be de clared in support of the Scottish min- ers, who are resisting a wage reduc- tion of 6 pence a day, has been con cluded. The ballot resulted in 518, 361 votes in favor of a general strike. Only £2,980 voted againgt. This unmistakable determination of the men to support thelr Scottish col- leagues and the apparently equally de. termined refusal of the employers to agree to the miners’ terms renders the work of intermediary difficult. Another conference hetween the em: ployers and the men will be held at the board of trade under the chair- manship of Winston Spencer Church 111 and unless a compromise ‘is then reached a general industrial upheaval appears inevitable. RESIGNATION 1S ACCEPTED Reyes’ Successor Will Be Chosen on Aug. 3. Bogota, Colombia, July 29.—The resignation of President Reyes was presented to the Colombian senate and unanimously accepted. August 3 was fixed as the date for the election of his successor to finish the consti- tutional period which ends Aug. 7, 1910. MAY REACH AN IMMENSE SUM Shortage of Indiana Bank Official Increasing.
