THE BEMIDJI DAILY PIONEER PUBLISHED BVERY AFTHENOON, BEMIDII PIONEER PUBLISHING CO. C. J. PRYOR. G, E. CARSON. @rterad In the postofice at Bemidil. Mion., second class matter. SUBSCRIPTION---$5.00 PER ANNUM —_— NO PAPER ON MONDAY. Wishing to give its large corps of employes a deserved vacation on the nation’s natal day, the Pio- neer has decided to issue no Daily paper next Monday, but will, like all patriotic firms of the city, sus- pend active duties that day and join our citizens and visitors in furnishing a good, old-fashioned celebration. We hope this custom will be gen- erally observed throughout the city. The two mills have agreed 1o shut down their plants, and 1t is but tair that all places not absolutely necessary to be open should be closed Monday. LOCAL PAPER A POWERFUL FACTOR. Little Falls Transcript: “Speak- ing of what a newspaper does for its community, the late United States Senator Davis of Illinois made an address in which he said: ‘Each year every local paper gives from $500 to $1,000 in free lines for the benefit of the community in which it is located. No other agency can or will do this. The editor in pro- portion to his means does more for his town than any other man, and with all fairness, man with man, he ought to be supported not because you like him or admire his writing, but because a local paper is the best investment a community can make. Today local papers are doing more work for less pay than any man on earth. Patronize your paper, not as a charity, but asan investment.’ WE'LL BEALL RIGHT, SHORTLY. Says the “News and Comment” man, in the Duluth News Tribune: “We have faith that the people of Beltrami county will in good time dispel the cloud of the present and the progressive spirit will prevail. The county is all right and most of the people are all right.” That Beltrami county has received very undesirable and much-repeated advertising because of the alleged indictment of some of our county officials is very evident. But we here aré not worrying about the incident half as much as some of the newspapers who have lent aid in circulating the reports, several of which had no foundation whatever in fact. Someone has been looking for some political notoriety, ‘at -the expense of the county, hence the very wide circulation given our “troubles.” We'll be all right, shortly, brother. Don’t you worry. TOURNAMENT PROGRAM GONFLIGTS WITH OURS [Continued from Page 1.] Ray Dennis will do the coupling for the Bemidji team. Dennis is acknowledged to be one of the best couplers in the entire country and always makes a good record at every tournament. He has, on several occasions equaled the world’s record {4 seconds) and this year is coupl- ing as well as ever. Dennis will have as a running mate Earl Geil or Albert Halvorson. It is possible that Earl Geil will also enter the coupling contest. Albert Halvorson will be Bemidji’s representative in the ladder-climbing contest. Halvorson is very fast and holds the record of the association (7 1-5 seconds), which he made at the tournament at Park Rapids sev- eral years ago. Bemidji’s flag team will be com- posed of Scott Stewart, Ray Dennis, Earl Geil, Charles Collins, Emil Gustafson and C. C. Crippen. Be- midji also holds the record of the association for the flag race, having completed the 600 yards in an even 66 seconds. The Bemidji Fire department has always had a splendid running team. The department has won champion- ship banners at five different tourna- ments, two of which are the prop- erty of the department through the running team having won banners four successive years, two years for each banner. A large number of Bemidji people will undoubtedly visit Crookston dur- ing the tournament to see the races and cheer the local firemen on to victory. . Subscribe for The Pioneer.
