SUBSCRIPTION---$5.00 PER ANNUM IS GOVERNOR CANDIDATE FOR U. S. SENA- TOR? = : George F. Authier, political writer for the Minneapolis Tribune, claims that Governor Johnson is being groomed by the democrats as a candidate for U. S. senator, to suc- ceed Moses E. Clapp; and among other things which he writes as indicative of this action on the part of the ‘dems,” Authier says: “The situation is peculiar, but not entirely impossible, as the demo- cratic leaders view it. Whether W. S. Hammond, John Lind or John A. Johnson himself |becomes the leader of the democratic gubernatorial fight, John A. Johuson will be the' real candidate for the senatorship, and this plan will include the support of republican votes. In many dis. tricts it is proposed to put up John- son as senator, and the test will be whether or not the legislature will be for him in the joint caucus or not. Such a test will furnish a nice situa- tion. It will determine whether or not Johnson can carry his personal following in the senatoria] fight, or whether he will lose it when he leaves the gubernatorial office. “From the northern part of the state, Johnson, in a fiight Jike this, may expect added support. Repub- lican senators, like Pugh, Laybourn, Alderman and others, would be in an embarrassing position. Johnson was the saving grace for the north- ern part of the statein his veto of the tonnage tax. Northern senators coming to St. Paul say that as a result of that veto, Johnson can have anything he wants from that section, and it is safe to assume that the Johnson forces are taking this situation into consideration in framing up their attack on the senatorship. Whether they would lose more in the southern part of the state than they have gained in the northern portion, remains to be seen.” HOLDS VANDERBILT TO BLAME Antonio A. Ruiz Discusses Death of Former Wife. Paris] June 26.—Antonio A. Rulz, former husband of Mrs. Mary Agnes Ruiz, who recently killed herself in London, freely discussed the death of his former wife. Rulz, who was once a diplomat in the service of his coun- try, Cuba, did not mince his words nor try to hide his feelings. He sald em- phatically he holds Altred G. Vander- bilt. responsible for his marital unhap- piness and attributes the death of the woman he divorced to her unhappy association with the young New York millionaire. “Although I divorced Mrs. Ruiz I have never forgotten that she once was my wife and I am inexpressibly grieved that she was brought to such an end by that man.” THEIR LOVE HAS A PRICE Fifty Women Sign Pledge to Marry Only Equal Suffrage Advocates. The seript writing filed at the Nor- folk customhouse is not sufficiently clear to tell exactly whether the name of . the suspect aboard the Arizonian is “Ling” or “Lang.” It could be taken for either. While the age of Elsle Sigel's murderer is given from New Yerk as thirty-five vears the age of Leon Ling, or Lang, aboard the Ari- zonian, is given as thirty-seven years. LEON TRACED TO WASHINGTON Chinaman Sent Message to Parents of Elsie Sigel. New York, June 26.—The fact that Elsie Sigel from Washington on the night of her disappearance, assuring them of her safety and.promising her early return, had been sent by Leon Ling, the young Chinaman whom the police charge with her murder, was established by Detective Van Wagner, who returned from Washington armed Thursday bound for San Francisco, is | ki the telegram sent to ‘the parents of | refused. with the orlginal of the telegram.
