il THE BEMIDJI DAILY PIONEER | PUBLISHSD NVERY AFTERNOON, BEMIDJI PIONEER PUBLISHING CO €. J. PRYOR. G E.CARSON, A. @. RUTLEDGE, News Editor. Ratered fn the postoffice at Bemid)t. Min. | second class matter. SUBSCRIPTION---$5.00 PER ANNUM THE COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES. The high school commencement whick took place last evening was one of the most -brilliant successes of this day andgeneration, and there was no lack of audience to witness the workmanship wrought out by these years of earnest endeavor and skilltul drill. An hour before the exercises commenced people were wending their way towards the city opera house, and when the exercises began standing room was at a premium. We look not upon this large gathering on the ground that “a free show draws the crowd,” but that the people realize and feel they have an interest in their public schools, and this was but a fair manifestation of it- As they beheld this culimation of well-applied and judiciously-directed efforts, they must certainly concede that the liberal support they have given has not been lavished in vain or trusted to hands that have mis- placed it; and, while it does take means to maintain our school system if it is progressive, it is means well- applied, and repays in benefits four- fold any community and our country in general. In this class there is nota dim star in the constellation, The entire class acquitted themselves with honor. The productions were credit- able, savored much of originality, and many sparkled with the richest gems of thought. - MOORHEAD RESCINDS SENTINEL LEASE. S. R. Moorhead, one time owner of the Turtle River Independent, but more recently of the Crookston papers, departed for Crookston yes- terday afternoon, having spent several days in Bemidji, in an effort to lease the Bemidji Sentinel. It was reported, earlier in the week, tkat Mr. Moorhead had closed a deal whereby he leased the Sentinel for six months, with a privilege of extending the lease. Yesterday, be- fore his his departure, however, Mr. Moorhead stated that he did not make the deal, because of the fact that he could not lease the paper unless J. J. Opsahl, member of the legislature from this district, con- trolled the policy of the "Sentinel, which he would not consent to. Itis said that A. Rood, who has been with the Sentinel for some time past, has leased the paper, pro- bably under the conditions which Mr. Moorhead refused to agree to. AITKIN MAN MAY BE APPOINTED STATE BANK EXAMINER. The Duluth Evening Herald prints a special telegram from St. Paul, to the effect that it is likely that J. B. Galarneault, the Aitkin banker, will be appointed as state bank examiner, when Governer Johnson gets around to the appointment of that newly- created official. In connection with this rumor, it will interest the public to know that Mr. Galarneault took a very prominent part in the democratic state convention which renominated Governor Johnson against his will, last vear. The Aitkin banker re- sponded for his county (the very first on the roll) when the names of counties were called for to place in nomination candidates for governor. Mr. Galerneault (for Aitkin county) gave way to the Ramsey county delegation, and Mayor Dan Lawler placed in nomination Gov- ernor Johnson, starting a demon- stration that lasted an hour. ‘There may be considerable sig- nificence in the rumor that Mr. Galerneanlt will be appointed ex- aminer. LOCAL FIREMEN ORGANIZE TEAM FOR TOURNAMENT [Continued from Page 1.] For couplers, the team will have Ray Dennis and Farl Geil.- Dennis, when in condition, is without doubt one of the fastest couplers in the United States. He has, on several occasions, equaled the world’s record and always does good work, having won first honors at several tourna- ments of this association. Bemidji has always had one of the most efficient fire departments in the state of Minnesota, and the 0ld Ghampion Running Team of Bemidji Fire Department. Top row standing—Earl Geil, Robert English, E. H. Cornwall, Bert Smith, C. R. Martin, (secretary and deceased), Harry Geil, W. Tozier, Arthur Narveson, John Goodman. Second row, sitting—Ray Dennis, Erton Geil, Harvey Woodward, Robert Collard, John Benner, “Jack” Peterson. running teams which the department has put on the cinder-path have always been in the front ranks with the winners. The team won championship banners at tournaments held at Be- midji, Cass Lake and Park Rapids, which meets were under the auspices of the old association. The local firemen won at Black- duck and Warren after the new asso- ciation was organized and now have two banners which became the permanent property of the depart- ment through its successive win- ning of championships at tourna- ments. This is a record which has never before been equaled in the state. The members of the Bemidji team have always been home boys and Bemidji has been justly proud of her runners. Earl Geil was captain of the first running team put out by the Be- midji fire department and he has ran with the team eves since; and this year he will be right to the front when they go “down the line.” If the boys train properly and get into good condition 1t is a “safe bet” that they will be awarded some valuable prices. On the second page of this issue of the Pioneer is printed a half-tone likeness of the Bemidji Fire depart- ment’s running team which made such a splendid record, a few years ago. Additional Locals Stands for $ucce$$. Little Falls Business college. Miss Olga Johnson departed last evening for her home at Blackduck, after having spent yesterday in the city visiting with her sister, Miss Delia Johnson. Mrs. Clara Ostegaard came down from Blackduck this morning, being accompanied by her brother, N. Burt. They departed this afternoon for East Grand Forks, where they will visit for several days with rela- tives. Deputy Sheriff Andrew Johnson returned this morning from a strenu- ous trip to the Tamarack river, north of Kelliher, whither he went to subpoena a witness to appear before the grand jury to testify asto some matters desired by that body. Harry Johnson, Clyde Johnson and C. E. Farrier, local young men who are well posted in cruising and estimating timber, departed this morning for Walker, where they ex- pect to enter the employ of the government in the work of re-esti- mating the timber on Leech Lake Indian reservation. George Hoover, the very efficient mixer of rsfreshments for A. A. Smith’s drink emporium at Kelliher, came to the city this morning, and we opine thatour job foreman will-in- duce George to “stick over” Sunday and enjoy the attractions which Bemidji affords its transcients on the first day of the week. Mrs. Bain came to the city yes- terday afternoon from her - claim, near Wilton, and left last evening for Blackduck, there to visit over Sunday. Mrs. Bain intends to offer proof, next Wednesday, on her claim, and hopes to soon be able to call the land her “‘very own,” de- spite the attempts of covetous people who have been instituting contests against her right to make final proof. Several members of.the corps of teachers who have assisted in the various departments of the Bemidji public schools during the past year, departed this morning, over the M. & L, for different destinations. No one could blame the “girls” if they were a trifle talkative, because they had been penned up in a stuffy room for several months and forced to ex- ercise dignity before the growing generation of ourcity. Have a good time, ladies, and may you return re- freshed and invigorated, is the wish of the Pioneer. Freel Free!
