THE BEMIDJI DAILY PIONEER PUBLISHED NVERY AFTERNOON, A A A A A A A A A A AN BEMIDJI PIONEER PUBLISHING CO €. J. PRYOR. G E. CARSON. A. 0. RUTLEDGE, News Editor. Entered in the postofice at Bemidji. Minn., second class matter. SUBSCRIPTION---$5.00 I’-ER ANNUM MEMORIAL DAY. . Tomorrow holds the chief place in the nation’s memory book. The thoughts that come with independ- ence day, the chief holiday of tbe people, are widely different from those born of tomorrow’s reflections. One is a day of rejoicing and the other is day of sorrow, that yet is not wholly sorrow. With all its sadness, Memorial day stirs the emotion of patriotism which can make for a nation’s stabillty. That which men can die for willingly is worth the saving, though the sacrifice must be repeated until seventy times seven. We read of the decrease of the names on the pension roll, and we see the double rank of formation of the parades of the veterans changed to single rank in order that a brave showing of pumbers without the numbers may be made, and we think of the veteran army as an army that time has nearly overcome. It is a great army yet. There are men still on the active list of the regular service who answered Lin- coln’s first call for troops. It will be many years before the last man who went South to the fight goes to his camping ground under the half- masted flag. Memorial day is a worthy day. Its spirit is of the kind that makes safe the future. LIKED PIONEER “BOOST” EDITION. H. M. SPEAKS ON TOBACCO TAX Kentuckian Urges Adoption of . His Amendment Repealing the Internal Revenue Duty on Leaf Tobacco. 8Says the Are Sorely Pressed and Fears Repetition of Re- cent Organized Crimes. Growers Washington, May 29.—That the out. rages of the night riders in Kentucky and Tennessee resulted from the op- pression of the ‘American Tobacce oompany and that unless the internal revenue tax on leaf tobacco in the hand is repealed these outrages will again occur was the declaration made by Senator Bradley of Kentucky in urging the adoption of his amend- ment to'the senate bill. This amend- ment proposes to restore to the tariff bill the house provision for the freei: sale of leaf tobacco by the farmer, which was stricken out by the finance committee of the senate. After re- viewing the growth of the American Tobacco company Mr. Bradley said that, not content with destroying all eompetition in the United States, this concern drove the Imperial Tobacce WILLIAM O. BRADLEY. company of Great Britain, its chiet competitor, to a compromise and ob- tained an agreement by which the Imperidl yielded up all competition in the United States. “France, Austria, Ttaly, Portugal and other countries each meanwhile de- creed that the government would buy and import tobacco as a business, the profit going into the coffers of the government’ under what is known as the regle system,” said Mr. Bradley. “The American Tobacco company, seeing the danger in this direction, entered into a conspiracy with the regle agents by which the territory should be and was divided, all agree- ing to pay the same.fixed price and alloting the territory into well defined districts so that there could be no conflict of interests.” Thus the producers found them- selves powerless and hemmed in on every side, continued Mr. Bradley, and after appealing to congress without, effect as a last resort organized the pooling societies, which resulted in a saturnalla of crime in Kentucky and Tennessee. While denouncing = the night rider outrages Mr. Bradley de- ¢lared that the tobacco leaf growers were so sorely pressed that they were forced to combine to protect them- selves and that the crimes which re- sulted were due to the trust’s oppres- sion. DENY CONTROL BY TRUST Flood of Protests From Independent Sugar Companies. ‘Washington, May 29.—There was a flood of protests by sugar refining companies in the senate agalnst a charge that they are controlled by the American Sugar Refining com- pany. Such documents were present- ed from the American Beet Sugar company by Senator Burkett; from the Carver Sugar company of Chaska, Minn, by Senator Clapp; from the T T kee, by Mr. La Follette; from the Unfon Sugar company, the Pacific Su- gar corporation of Los Angeles coun- ty, Cal.; the Los Alamitos Sugar com- pany of Orange county, Cal, and the Sacramento Valley Sugar. company by Senator Flint. Farmers of Utah and of Michigan also were largely represented in peti- tions presented by Senators Suther- land and William Alden Smith, pray- Ing against any reductions in the su- gar duties provided in the pending tariff bill. 5 Lake Vessel Builder Dead.
