THE BEMIDJI DAILY PIONEER PUBLISHED NVERY AFTEBNOON, BEMIDJI PIONEER PUBLISHING CO. C. J. PRYOR @ E.CARSON. A. G. RUTLEDGE, News Editor. Watered in the postofice at Bemidjl. Minn.. wecond class matter. SUBSCRIPTION---$5.00 PER . ANNUM RUMORED NEWSPAPER CHANGES AT CROOKSTON. It is rumored that J. P. Dottson, who owns both the Crookston Daily Journal and the Crookston Daily Times, will combine the two papers on June 1, and issue butone daily thereatter. Under this arrangement, it will be possible for Crookston to have at least one up-to-date daily paper. As they are now conducted, neither the Times or the Journal are what they should be fora citythe size of Crookston. A large proportion of the matter printed in either paper is plate or reprint, much of the latter being reproduced without credit and literally “stolen.” There is another interecting rumor connected with the proposed merger of the Times and Journal, to the effect that W. E. McKenzie, who always gave Crookston a live paper, will re-enter the field, at no distant date, with a paper. “Mac” was always a hustler, and was one of the few newspaper men of the north half of the state who made money out of his ventures in newspaper publications. [Continued from Yesterday.] “Hank” Mills, reported as being the handsomest youg man in Brain- erd, attended the Bemidji-Brainerd game last Saturday. The eighth grade class play has not been progressing very rapidly on account of the absence of their teacher, Miss Delia Johnson. Inez Geil, a graduate of our high school, returned to Bemidji the first of the week from Blackduck, where she has been teaching school. There is an old sayin, “Spare the rod, and spoil the child,” and a certain young man of the eighth grade believes 'that if this is true he will make an ideal man. In the Bemidji-Brainerd baseball game last Saturday, Gill and Hilliard were the battery for Bemidji, while Alderman and Parker were in the “points” for Brainerd. Thomas Beare, a senior of the Brainerd High School, came up from that place with the baseball team for the purpose of witnessing the contest and visiting with old friends. Manager Engels has received word from Bagley that the high school of that place will not have a baseball team this year. Thisis a great disappointment to the boys, as |1, they had fizured on this game. There has been considerable ab- sence in the eighth grade during the last week. gave the pupils of this class quite a lecture on the subject of absence, the other day, there being fifteen cases on Monday. The students of several of the grade rooms have completed their essays on “How to Improve the Looks of Our City.” Some of the compositions are very good and will be turned over to the Bemidji Im- provement League. Miss Celia Clark, an old Bemidji high school student, returned to this city last week from Forman, N. D., at which place she has been teaching school. Miss Clark’s friends are glad that sheis back among them again. Although the Bemidji boys were defeated last Saturday by Brainerd, the contest went to prove that with a little more practice our nine will be among the best. It must be re- membered that a majority of the members of Bemidji team were new at the game, and that, taking every thing into consideration, the boys put up a plucky fight.
