Mackenzie of this city and ascertain just what is “doing” with regard to the third annual fair of the Beltrami County Agricultural association, which will be held in Bemidji Wed- nesday, Thursday and Friday, September 15-16-17. Mr. Macken- zie is secretary of the association, and the manner in which he handled last year’s fair resulted in entire satisfaction among exhibitors and patrons of the “show.” This year, larger premiums will be given, and, profiting by last season’s ex- periences, the president (W. G. Schroeder) and the secretary will put forth greater efforts to further advance the " exhibition, which promises to be a record-breaker among like enterprises of northern Minnesota. CROKER ON HIS WAY HOME Pleased With American Visit Hu Leaves For Ireland. New York, April 28.—Sailing on the Lusitania today was Richard Croker, former leader of Tammany Hall, who is bound for his home in Ireland. Mr. Croker declared his intentior of returning to this city in the fall but disclaimed any idea of participat ing in the coming municipal cam paign. HAD BEEN ILL SOME WEEKS Former Congressman Joseph W Babcock Dead. ‘Washington, April 28.—Former Rep- resentative Joseph W. Babcock of ‘Wisconsin, for fourteen years a mem ber of the lower house of congress and for many years chairman of the national ~ Republican congressional committee, died at his home here. He was fifty-nine y old. He had becr fll for some weeks with a compl tion of liver and kiduey troubles. Mr. Babcock was known principally for the yeoman work which he performed for the election of Republican con gressmen as chairman of the Repub- lican congressicnal committee. He was regarded among his colleagues when he was in the house as one of the shrewdest politicians in congress As chairman of the Republican con- gressional committce Mr. Babcock managed six congreszional campaigns for the election of a Republican house, not one of which did he lose.
