The mica schedule was stricken out and a new one substituted providing that unmanufactured mica shall pay a duty of 5 cents a pound and 20 per cent ad valorem and that mica, cui or trimmed, mica plates and all man- ufactures of mica shall pay 10 cents per pound and 20 per cent ad valorem. The committee amendment increas- ing the duty on round iron or steel wire smaller than No. 16 was voted down, 155 to 146, and in its stead there was adopted a substitute pre- sented by Mr. Clark of Missouri fixing the rate at three-fourths of 1 cent per pound. 1 A 'long wrangle ensued over the right to amend any, other portion of paragraph 134. STATE PAYS NO MORE TIPS Wisconsin Officers Must Cut Them Out of Expense Accounts. Madison, Wis., April .—State offi- cers and employes must join the anti- tipping leagne. At least they must do so unless they care to remain with | the majority at their own expense. The state of Wisconsin will pay no more tips for its service. Attorney General Frank L. Gilbert in an opinion says that “no statute seems broad enough to authorize the payment of any service arising out of gratuities such as tips.” For a time these items contained in expense accounts were allowed. Blast Kills Three Workmen. Nimrod. Mont., April ,—Three workmen were killed in a blast on the Northern Pacific construction work near here. One of the men was blown a distance of 250 feet into the Hell Gate river. His body was recovered. The other two men were buried be- neath a large mass of debris and rock. Census Bill Reported to Senate. Washington, April s—The census | bill was reported to the senate by Mr. La Follette, chairman of the commit- tee on the census, who stated that he would ask the senate to take up this bill for consideration at the next day’s session.
