Will Shannon left yesterday after- noon for Grand Forks to go out on his run as mail clerk between Grand Forks and Duluth after enjoying a few days’ rest at his home in this city. Mrs. K. Gibbs and little child of Farley spent yesterday visiting with friends in this city and mak- ing some purchases at the local stores, returning home on the even- ing train. C. N. Smith, superintendent of the woods department of the Henne- pin Lumber company, returned to Mizpah this morning on the freight[ train after a visit here to secure material for his camps. L. Nap. Lapoint came in from Blackduck yesterday afternoon to attend a meeting of the Masonic lodge in this city last evening and returned to the “Duck” on this morning’s freight train. A. A. Carter and J. Gullickson, local manager for the Hamm Brewing company, returned this morning from Ranier and other points in the northern part of the country where he went on business for the company. J. J. Opsahl; republican nominee for re-election to the office of repre- sentative of this district, returned this morning from Orth (formerly called Bridgie) where he has been looking over some timber land. Miss Janie Mills came in this morning from Northome to enjoy the week-end with her parents in this city. Miss Janie is a graduate of the local high school and of the St. Cloud Normal school, and is teaching in the village schools at Northome. Attention Samaritans—All mem- bers of the local lodge of Samaritans are requested to meet at the Odd Fellows hall at 1 o’clock tomorrow afternoon, for the purpose of attend- ing the funeral of the late Brother John Washburn. Rigs have been provided for Lady Samaritans. J. Bisiar, V. G. S. J. M.'Stafford, the Minnesota avenue barber, wears an exceedingly pleased countenance these days and is even more jovial than is his usual want. A big, bouncing boy arrived at his home Thursday night and has already taken the reins of govern- ment of the Stafford home into his own hands; and “Jap” asserts that the strenuous youngster bears a close resemblance to his famous uncle, Steve Withy of Crookston. Winter of Bemidji spent a couple of days on Red Lake in kis launch. Mr. Winter returned home Monday. = Charles Hamlin has turned his new house over to the plasterer. Mr. Hamlia will move his family in as soon ‘as the house can be made ready. A large party took passage on the ““Redby” for Shotley and vicin- ity Friday morning. A number of families will make that place their future home. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Carter of Oninnette, Canada, arrived here last week, Mr. Carter, who is a son of D. W. Carter of this place, will make his home here for the present, ¥ The passenger train onthe Red Lake road was two hours late Monday evening. The delay was caused by the wrecking of a log- ging train about nine miles south of Redby. The logging train ran three cars off the track but no one was injured. The passenger train was gelayed agarn Tuesday morn- ing by the accident. Attack Publicity Statute. Honolula, Oct. ' —The constitution- ality of the enactmant prohibiting cor- porations from contributing ‘to cam- palgn funds is being attacked in a case before United States District Judge Dole. The ground taken in the objection is that the act affects the election of state and county officers in cases where no federal congressional office is concerned, making it an in- terference with state rights.
