However, we went to work, and succeeded in people so that (to us) as far as farmers’ exhibits were concerned, the fair was a success. The inclement; weather, of course, injured the attendance, but, notwithstanding| this unavoidable circumstance, the | finances are in a very sxtisfactory, 1o condition. We started out with having to pay for the grand stand, which had been sold by the sheriff last year to satisfy § a judgment; and this (with other amounts which show in the state- ment published in this issue) made a total disbursement of $149.58,| which represents the deficit of the fair of 1907, and nothing whatever to show for it. This year we have erected a new building, valued at $300. We have a grand stand belonging to the asso- ciation, worth $250. The premiums| are paid and the state will pay backx-m- the amount of premiums (about" there are about‘A $450). In all $1,000 of assets, Against this we! owe the banks $216.83 and interest for twelve months. This, we believe, justifies us in saying the fair was, also a financial success. The success of the fair, however, was due to the efforts of our friends, who put their shoulders to the! wheel. Among them I might name G. E. Carson, Charles F. Schroeder, E. H. Cornwall, C.]J. Pryor, A.G. Rutledge, all of whom gave their time, without renumeration of any; kind. H The columns of the Pioneer were open to our fair, without cost of | any kind to us, all of which we| return thanks for. i The Sentinel, News and other| county papers also contributed to our success. | And last, but not least, we owe a debt of gratitude to our asslstant secretary, W. J. Markham. Yours very truly, W. R. Mackenzie, Secretary. (Signed) Secretar’ys “Report. Bagley, Oct, 2.— 12 m.—(Special to Pionear)—The second day of the Clearwater County fair opened with bright skies and a smiling sun to assist in bringing together the larg- est number of farmers and visitors that have ever gathered in Clear- water county. The display of vegetables, grains and grasses surpasses anything that has ever been exhibited in the state and arrangements are now under way, under the guidance of A. J. McGuire, of the Grand Rapids Experimental farm, P. V. Collins, of the Nortwestern Agriaulturist, and W. R. Mackenzie, secretary of the Beltrami County Agricultural association, tosend the whole ex- hibit, as it is at the fair building, to the Omaha exposition. These gentlemen state that never before has it been their pleasure to judge such a perfect lot of veget- ables, grains and grasses, and their | enthusiasm has awakened the people of the county to the point where it is hoped they will join with the judges in permitting the exhibits to be shipped to Omaha. | The stock display is good, but not what it would have been had the {weather been more favorable the |early part of the week. The roads from the western end of the county are almost impassable, and as it is the oldest-settled portion of the county, as well as the first to go into dairy- ing, it has the premium-winning Istock. ! A splendid showing is being made in the poultry, sheep and hog departments. Splendid speeches were delivered by P. V. Collins, A. J. McGuire and | William Robertson. George Welch of St. Paul was jto have been here, but did not put in an appearance up to the {noon hour. Congressman Steener- | son will speak tomorrow night, when he will deliver his famous lecture on the Panama canal. Saturday, October 3, will be “Everybody’s day.” On this date all troubles will be thrown to the winds and he who fails to have a !good time and laugh, will have him- | self to blame, There will be an in- teresting program of laughable and exciting sports, consisting of a Tug- o-war between fifteen farmers re- siding north of Bagley and fifteen farmers south for a prize of $15. T he greased pig, for him who can catch it will be turned loose. Twelve sacks for that number of jumper for a cash prize of $3 will be fur- nished. Five dollars wili go to the | best foot racer who resides in Clear- water county outside of Bagley. Apples in unlimited quantities will be given to those boys who know how to catch them floating in water. Music that will please the ear and stir up the dormant feelings of the “chronic tired” will be on tap, and the glad hand will be in evidence County Board in Session. The board of county commis- sioners of Beltrami countv convened yesterday afternoon and have been in session yesterday afternoon, last evening and today. Most of the time of the board has been taken up with approving bonds of banks as sureties for county de- positories and also the bonds of treasurers of school districts of the county. A big bunch of bills has been al- lowed and disposed of. A more complete account of the doings of the board will be given in tomorrow’s Pioneer.
