i THE BEMIDJI DAILY PIONEER PUBLISHED NVERY AFTNRNOON, BEMIDII PIONEER PUBLISHING CO. By CLYDE J.JPRYOR. Entered in the postofice at Bemidji. Minn., a8 second class matter. SUBSCRIPTION---$5.00 PER ANNUM —_— OPSAHL EVADES FUNKLEY’S CHALLENGE. Ina write-up which occupies, in sections, nearly the entire front page of the Bemidji Sentinel of this week, J. J. Opsahl atlempts to evade the direct challenge made by Henry Funkley to publicly debate “his (Opsahl’s) legislative record at any time and place Opsahl may select; and Opsahl gets bzchind the very convenient armor of throwing mud at Funkley’s past record as county attorney. Opsahl does mnot accept the challenge to openly debate his record, so that all may hear, but makes the provision that the record be discussed by the Pioneer man, in the office of either the Sentinel or the Pioneer, where he could crowd the place with his admirers and not give the public opportunity to hear him talk. One of the best equipments of a legislator is the ability to set forth the “meat” of a statement, in a few words which do not tire, in order that action may be had quickly; and the fact that Opsahl takes some five columns to answer ‘‘yes” or “no” to a brief challenge for debate, is gignificant. And Opsahl desired the Pioneer to publish, without recompense, five columns of matter, which could as well have been covered in a half column., If he will cut down his harrangue to the same brevity as the challenge, we will publish it. Certainly we will not devote some five columns of the Pioneer to the reproduction of a lot of “rot” as to what “mineself and Got” have ac- complished in this world, and setting forth what should be explained on the platform as per the challenge. By all means, let Opsahl take the platform and, facing the people of his district as he would the members of the legislature, let him tell what great things he hasaccomplished. Accept or reject the challenge, Opsahl. It was made to you by Mr. Funkley, over his own signa- ture, and he will attend to the matter. The Pioneer will publish your reply, if it is limited to the same brevity as the original chal- lenge. FEEECEEEFEEEE E‘fifi‘lfi‘(fi(‘% % Political Announcements 3 3 33 333333 FOR JUDGE OF PROBATE. J. L. George. Tortured Political Prisoners. Dorpat, Russia, Sept. 4—A sergeant of police and six wardens of the local prison were - convicted of torturing political prisoners with the idea of ex- torting confessions and sentenced to one year’s imprisonment.. T TN e — NSISTS AGTION MUS —— of Mulai Hafid: J_‘. SITUATION CLEARING TP German Officials Express Surprise at . the Agitation of French and English Papers—Peace in Morocco and Res- toration of Trade to a Normal Basis Can Only Be Secured by the Plan Outlined. Berlin, Sept. 4—The action of Ger- many cmcem}ng Morocco, it was ex- Plained, is limited to the suggestion to the signatories of the Algeciras act that the time has arrived to recognize Mulai Hafid as sultan of Morocco. Official wonderment is expressed at the agitation of the French and Eng- lish newspapers over the occurrence. They act as though Germany had done something outside her privileges instead of something that one of the signatory powers must do if the Mo- roccan situation is to be cleared up. Mulai Hafid has informed the pow: ers on several occasions that he would fully observe the terms of the Alge- ciras agreement and he doubtless will repeat these pledges if to do so is re- garded as a necessary preliminary to his recognition. German trade in Morocco is suffer- ing from thecontinuance of disorder there, it was further explained, and Mulai Hafid and his lieutenant gover- nors have failed to recognize the rights of persons under German pro- tection. Consequently, the German consul at Tangier, Dr. Vassel, has gone to Fez to straighten out these difficulties. France some time ago sent a skillful and experienced agent 1o the court of Mulai Hafid, where he has since remained looking out after French interests. This envoy is an Algerian in the French consular service. It appears here that the French government desires to make certain private arrangements with Mulai Mafid before coming out in support of the legitimacy of his claim to the sultanate. Another probable cause of the dis- satisfaction in Paris is that certain French interests made loans to Abdul Aziz since the beginning of the civil war and now they would like to per- suade or compel Mulal Hafid to take over responsibility for these transac- tions. From the German point of view this is unjust. BRITAIN HOLDING ALOOF. Not Yet Prepared to Recognize Mulai Hafid. London, Sept. 4—It is learned that the British government is holding aloof from Mulai Hafid, the new sul- tan of Morocco, for- the present, but ibat it proposes to recognize him in due time. British officialdom is irri- tated by the course adopted by Ger- many, which it regards as an attempt to gain influence over and the good will of Mulai Hafid by stealing a march on the other powers. Consul- tations are now._going on between Great Britain, France and Spain and there i8 no doubt but that Great Brit- ain and France will act together and probably insist that Mulai Hafid give promises to carry out obligations of Morocco to the powers before they recognize him. OFFICIAL CIRCLES CALM. French Press Continues Excited Over Moroccan Question. Paris, Sept. 4—Although the tone of the French press in its comments on the Moroccan- situation s still somewhat excited the belief prevails in official circles that Germany’s ac- tion, unless followed up, is not likely to lead to grave international incident France is confident that none of the powers will take immediate action upon Germany’s advice. French 8ending Reinforcements. Colom-Bechar, Algeria, Sept. 4—A French reinforcing colum is now pro- ceeding under forced marches to Bou- denib, on the Algerian frontier, where a French detachment of 1,500 men is surrounded by Berbers- estimated at 15,000 men. The French intend to take the affensive as soon as these reinforcements arrive. Russian Paymaster Robbed. Kharkav, Russia, Sept. 4—A band of highwaymen attacked and robbed & railroad paymaster of the amount. of the monthly payroll while he was proceeding from the bank to the rail- road station. News of the holdup was conveyed to the authorities and police ’| and soldiers were rushed to the scene. They opened fire on the robbers, who began to retire, at the same time re- turning the fire. Three men, includ- ing one of the robbers, were killed. The others got away. ‘Twenty-eight Japanese Perish. Victoria, B. C., Sept. 4—News was brought by the steamer Tango of the sinking of the Japanese steamer Ban- kok off Chiua-prefecture on Aug. 6 with a loss of twenty-eight lives. The steamer, a vessel of 2,359 tons, was ‘'loaded with coul from Kuheran. She had a crew of thirty-seven, of whom rine were saved. BALLOON TAKES FIRE. Aeronaut Falls Five Hundred Feet to His Death. Waterville, Me;, Sept. 4.—In full view of 25,000 horrified spectators as- Sembled on the Central Maine fair grounds Charles Oliver Jones, the well known aeronaut of Hammondsport, N. Y, fell a distance of 500 feet to his .fierfiaiy;iirges Recognition There is no need of anyone -effect a quick cure it is suffering long with this disease, for to only necessary to take a few doses of Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarthoea Remedy In fact, in most cases one dose is sufficiént. When the aeronaut reached a height of more than 500 feet the spectators were amazed to see small tongues of flames issuing from under the gas bag in front of the motor. At this time the balloon had passed out of the fair grounds. Many persons in the great crowd en- deavored to apprise Jones of the dan- ger, but several minutes elapsed be- fore he noticed the fire. Then he grasped the rip cord and by letting out the gas endeavored to reach the earth. The machine had descended but a short distance when a sudden burst of flame enveloped the gas bag, the framework immediately separating from the bag. Jones fell with the frame of his mo- tor and when the spectatars reached him he was lying under it. The phy- sicians whe were in the crowd found that Jones "ad no chance to survive, as he was :njured internally and his spine was broken. Must Change Their Politics. St. Peter “urg, Sept. 4—The profes- sors and §-structors in the imperial universities and schools of Russia have received a circular letter from the minister of education ordering those who are members of the Consti- tutional Democratic or other illegal political perties either to withdraw from these parties or resign their po- sltions. This act is a severe blow to the Constitutional Democrats,.whose membership is made up largely of pro- fessors and instructors. Elect lowa Senator Sept. 9.
