N Favorite Fishing and Bathing Grounds Near Bemidji Beach. Land Around Lake Bemidji Being Platted and Sold Rapidly for Sites for Summer Homes. Lakeside, Lavinia, Bemidji Beach, Grand Forks Bay and Chautauqua Beach Being Improved. The present summer has been by far the best in the history of Bemidji in the matter of summer resort busi- ness and a number of people, who| have been visiting this city for the purpose of taking an outing and spending one to several weeks on the shores of Lake Bemidji, have been larger by far than any previous year. During the last two years three different summer settlements have been started on the shores of Lake Bemidji. In addition to Grand Forks Bay, which latter place was started seven years ago, people of Grand Forks, Fargo and other points in the northwest have bought lots at Lavinia, Lakeside and Bemidji Beach and many elegant summer homes have been erected. Some of the finest residences have been erected. At Lavinia there have been a half dozen new houses erected this summer together with ice houses and out buildings. A. P. Chandler of Fargo, N. D., was the first to complete a residence this year. He came here with his family June 1 for the summer. He owns a 22-foot launch and has been enjoying life hughly up on the lake shore. Dr. J. D. Taylor, mayor of Grand Forks, owns the largest and the best house on the mnorth shore of the lake, the house being com- pleted four weeks ago. The mayor has been here occasionally and his sister, Mrs. Van Syckle and her son were here almost all summer. J. J. Opsahl, the orizinalA owner of the land at Lavinia, hasa fine home, which is four years old, and which he remodeled lately. He owns a canoe and a rowboat, which carries Mr. Opsahl and his family from Lavinia to Bemidji. T. B. Beaudette owns a neat summer cottage at Lavinia. Mrs. H. O. Rossaen of Fisher and her children have been occupy- ing their summer cottage at La- vina. 3 Among the others 'who were here spending the summer in cot- | { tages at Lavinia were Mrs. J. King and two children of Grand Forks. V. Vooler has a neat log house which he is occupying with his family the year around.. Mr. Vooler operates the “Swallow,” a gasoline launch between Lavinia and Bemidji. Lakeside is the name of another platted part of the lake shore which is just north of Lavinia, where a large of about 100 acrss has just been laid out and placed in nice conditions behind the cottages on shore. Among those who have nice cot- tages at Lakeside, with modern improvements and who have been spending considerable time there this summer are Earl L. Irish and wife of Grand Forks, M. S. Titus and family of Bemidji, H. E. Crane and family, Minto, N. D.,, T. C. Griffith of Grand Forks, Mrs, H. L. Carter and family of Grand Forks, and the following, also from Grand Forks: W. J. Mayor, Mrs. C. F. Welter and family,ex-Chief Justice GuyC.H. Corliss and family, O. J. Barnesand family and F. P. Nash and family. Several of the parties mentioned own launches and they enjoy life to the the fullest while at Lakeside. There are nice places for bathing and boat- ing and that end of the lake is about as good as the best for summer resort purposes. Another summer resort colony has been established at Bemidji Beach, which is an ideal place on the north shore of the lake, west of ILakeside and Lavinia. E. K. Anderson and wife of Bemidji own a _ neat little house They have spent much of their time this summer at the Beach. Hans Gastad and family of East Grand Forks, Minn., and S. FRED MALZAHN, President: where he has also built a new boat house and’ cow shed and other buildings. He has the launch, “Eagle.” He has a thoroughly up-to-date summer home. Chautauqua Beach is a newly- platted portion of the ground on the northwest shore of Lake Bemidji, which gives promise of surpassing any of ‘the other platted portions on the lake, which are used for summer resort purposes. ’I/‘he Beach is sandy and the land is high and dry, there being considerable of the native timber still standing on the land. Chautauqua Beach is located in an alcove of the lake which is pro- tected from the winds and waves and is a very desirable place for a summer home. The Chautauqua Beach Association members have made no sp‘ecial effort to dispose of the lots on the Beach, although there have been many inquiries as to prices, terms, etc. Several lots have already been purchased and no doubt this property will be rap- idly taken up for new summer resi- dences. Grand Forks Bay is the oldest summer resort on the lake andis platted on the lake shore on the northeast portion of the city of Bemidji. ‘This resort was built some seven years ago by residents from. Grand Forks, N. D., and since that time has been the home of many of the people from the west- ern towns during the summer months. There are many splendid cottages at Grand Forks Bay and thé prop- erty is considered very valuable. Prof. Merfifield, presldent of the U. of N.
