ROLLING STOCK IN EXCELLENT SHAPE Oanadian Pacific- Prepared fo: "Mechanics’ Strike. Winnipeg, Man,, Aug. 8—It is be ginning to be realizeed now that the Canadian Pacific railway was pre pared for the mechanics’ strike for some time. Locomotives and rolling stock at present are in excellent con- dition, the dry summer being light on wear and tear. Besides 300 Japanese mechanics, trained in railway shops in the Pacific coast states and technieal schools, are arriving and being dis- tributed where necessary. Sleeping and -dining cars are drawn up close to the shops to provide accommodations for nonunion labor and are guarded by special constables. Fifteen shop foremen or gang bosses walked out) here, declining to work with importa- tions, only one declining to come out. No violence or disorder has been re- ported from any company’s shop in Western Canada. It is not expected that the strike will interfere in any way with the handling of Western crops, even though it should last until wheat starts to move, which is not expected. ‘Western wheat will not begin to reach the railroad in any volume for five or 8ix weeks and the Canadian Pacific has been making preparations for handling it. It is estimated that the crop will require about 160,000 box cars and of these there are already 150,000 in the West, with a corre- sponding supply of engines. The rest will be sent on as freight is offered and will be kept in the West until they are required. > Canadian Pacific telegraphers are! seriously preparing for a strike within a fortnight. The arbitration award will be forwarded to Ottawa next week and the men do not expect to be satisfied. . GIRCUS DAY AT REMIDJI TUESDAY, AUGUST 11TH PERFORMANCES AT 2 AND 8 P. M.
