BEMIDJI, MINNESOTA, TUESDAY EVENING, JUNE 9, 1908. PRIZES FOR BEST DECORATED BUSINESS HOUSES The executive committee of the Elks State Convention' Meeting has authorized the giving of the following prizes to local business men for the best-decorated business house in Bemidj, during June 18-19-20: - Horsemen of Minnesota and the Dakotas are manifesting much inter- est in the races which will be pulled off here at the end of the Elks con- uention meeting to be held here next week. Two day’s racing have been planned to be held under the auspi- ces of the Bemidji Jockey Club, on June 20 and 21, and the club has prepared a very interesting program for the crowds which are expected here on those dates. The following is the program of the regular harness races: William Begsley, secretary of the Bemidji Jockey Club, is recieving many applications for entry branks. Among them is a request from Wil- linm Browning of Fargo, who raced here last fall with “Pat Ford,” the 2:10}4 trotter, and who has ten other horses this season and wishes to enter all of them in the races here. Mr. Wier, of the Elcatra Stock Farm of Mankato, has also sent for twelve entry blanks and says he will have some fast steppers here. Bob Cherry will be here with “Little Jim,” and several other good F. 8. CAN, Chairman Executive Committee. Committee Meeting Wednesday Evening. At a meeting of the city council, held last evening, the site of the new Carnegie Library ° building was definitely settled, and the council adopted a resolution authorizing City Attorney Gibbons to draw the proper notice to be published in the legal paper vacating a part of Fifth street eastward on Bemidji avenue to the lakeshore, a petition signed by a majority of the freeholders in that vicinity having been submitted to the council. The committee on streets and sidewalks recommended that the Geil. No doubt the board will recommend the purchase of the lockers, and the council will appropriate a sufficient amount to cover this expense from the mis- cellaneous fund authorized by the councilto be available for emergen- cies of this kind. The fast pacing pole team belonging to A. J. Rolland of Moorhead will be pitted against “Bemidji Belle,” the speedy Jittle local pacer, in matched races. The team owned by Rolland is the fastest pole team in the state of Minnesota and the owner has won a lot of money with his team. The horses will be hitched to a light racing wagon, while “Bemidji Belle” will be driven toaracing bike. This race will be exciting, as “Bemidji Belle” is reeling off miles close to the 2:20 mark, these days. A strong card for the races will be the waiving of the distance flag in the free-for-all race on Sunday, when “Prince Hal” will be driven out in an attempt to beat the state record for a half-mile track. The horse is rounding to in splendid condition and As but one week elapses before the convention every com- mitteeman should be present. TURN OUT AND DO YOUR DUTY. ST. GLOUD ELKS GOMING is pacing some very fast miles with the greatest of ease. As this great pacer has never before appeared in the state his work here will be watched with much interest. These races will be called at 1:30 o’clock p. m., on the 20th and 21st, so as not to interfere with any base- ball games that may be arranged for the same days. Le Neirs Making Hit. at Brinkmau. The Le Noirs delighted a large audience at the Brinkman Family Theater last evening when they pre- sented their famous metanorphic mystery. Their trunk mystery is] simplp marvelous as well as being strange and facinating. It was at the special request of several people in this city that Manager Brinkman secured the services of the Le Noirs for this week. Although the act which the Le Noirs presented when here last winter drew large crowds to the Brinkman Family Theater, the act which they now present is entirely new, but equally good and entertain- ing. Jesse Harry, the ex-marshal of the village of Grand Rapids, and who is the efficient game warden for Itasca county, came to the city yesterday afternoon and spent part of last night here.. Mr. Harry is T now in the employ of Sheriff Hooli- han of Itasca county, and he left here during the night for Devils Lake, on a mission for Hoolihan. Mr. Harry is a candidate for the republican nomination for sheriff of Itasca county, and he has the sup- port of most of the influential genple of Grand Rapids, and is thoroughly well liked all over the county. He has served as deputy sheriff at different times, and is well qualified for the position he seeks. Harry has many friends in Bemidji, and were we per- mitted to cast our ballot for Itasca county candidates, Harry would cer- taialy get a big vote here. Board of Equalization Meets June 22. The adjustment of personal prop- erty assessments is done each year by the town, village or city boards of equalization, and this year these boards will be in session in every town, city or village in the State of Minnesota on Monday morning, June 22. Citizens in each precinct who are not satisfied with the assessment or who are interested in any way in the assessment of taxes should make it a point to attend this meeting, to ex- amine into the work done: by the assessors. The equalization board of the City of Bemidji, as appointed by chair- man Gould, is as follows: First ward, L. F. Johnson; second ward, Thomas Smart; third ward, John Washburn; forth ward, G. W. Rea. This board will meet on Monday, June 22, and no doubt they will be in session for several days. Short Locals on last page. W. Koons, the exalted ruler, they will “make ’er hum,” when they get here. The St. Cloud brethern will un- doubtedly come up in a special car, and they will be lively, all the time. At a meeting of the lodge held last Friday night, eighteen “fawns” were initiated, and there was a large gathering of the “browsers.” The St. Cloud Times says of the matter of attending the state meeting, which was discussed at the meeting: “District Deputy Guerin gave an interesting account of the prepara- tions being made by Bemidji lodge for the entertainment of the Elks upon the occasion of the meeting of State assosiation in that city on the 18th, 19th and 20th of this month. The Bemidji Elks have made great preperations for the entertainment of the visitors and a fund of $5,000 has been raised to provide a good time for the Elks. The indications are that there will be a large attend- ance. ‘A committee of Fred Price, R. L. Spiering and John J. Leisen appointed to arrange matters for the St. Cloud Elks who will attend.” Local news on last pane; ““Jim” George Resigns. James L. George, who has acted as manager for the Bemidji Brewing company since that company was reorganized, has tendered his resigna- tion, the same to take effect July 1. Mr. George has not yet announced what he will do when he leaves the Brewing company, but it is certain that he- will make his home in Bemidji and will undoubtedly boost this city and engage in some private business. “Jim” George is one of the. most popular of the good fellows in this city and everybody will wish him success in whatever he undertakes. HAD FINE GANOE TRIP THROUGH TO BOUNDARY Two Grand Forks Boys Went Down the Mississippi and Up the Big Fork. J. E. Turner and G. K. Munro, two Grand Forks, N. D., boys, ze- turned o - Bemidji this. morning| from a canoe trip thatwas exceed- ingly interesting and filled with considerable danger. The two gentlemen came to Bemid- ji two weeks ago and embarked in their canoe down the Mississippi river to Cass Lake, thence down the Cass (Mississippi) river to Lake Winnibogoshish, up the Cut Foot Sioux and over portage to the Big Fork river: They went down the entire length of the Big Fork river to the Rainy river, thence up that turbulant and treacherous stream to International Falls, returning to Bemidji via the M. & I. Railway. Messrs. Turner and Munro had many exciting adventures, shooting rapids and avoiding many rocky places in the streams which they traversed. They saw a great many deer, and had their first glimpse of the monarch of the northern forest— a gigantic moose. The canoeists left for their home at Grand Forks this afternoon. Hazen has been making a visit among his* farmer friends in the country around - Bemidji and has interviewed them concerning his candidacy for the republican nomination for sheriff, Mr. Hazen found that his candidacy is being very-well received, and as a result A. B. HAZEN of the trip he is feeling more con- fident than ever that he will land the nomination. Speaking of his chances, Mr. Hazen -says: ¢I find a very healthy Hazen sentiment, everywhere I go. I have -received many offers of J|assistance and words of encour- agement from men who opposed my candidacy two years ago. I believe that I can hold all of the support that was accorded to me in'1906, and am certain that I am making new friends, right along. I do not want to appear to be boasting but I am well satisfied with the outlook for my nomina- tion.” 2 Additional local matter will be found on fourth page. “To the Public. After some discussion as to the advisibility of expending further money on streets, it was decided that this work be done, and the ciiy attorney was authorized to have the proper resolution presented to the council at the next meeting. The bond of Doran Bros., licens- ing themas ‘city plumbers, was accepted and approved. The council, after hearing the opinion of the city attorney as to the legality ' of the city’s helping purchase lockers for the militia company, accepted the report and now await the communication from the armory board, which consists of Captain A. E. Otto, Mayor Pogue and City Treasurer Earl N. J., Eureka Fire Hose Manufac- turing company and Northern Fire Apparatus company of Minneapo- lis, The council acted favorably on the suggestion of L. G. Pendergast that the survivors of the First Min- nesota Regiment be invited to hold their 1909 annual reunion in this city and Mayor Pogue was instructed to extend the proper invitation to the veterans, to meet here. Alderman Johnson called the at- tention of the council to the necessity of a general cleaning up of the city at once, in order that we present a clean appearance to the. many visit- ors who will be here next week, and Mayor Pogue stated that he would authorize the city health department and the city scavanger to clean all of the alleys and lots in blocks 14, 16 and 17 in the business portion of the city and also the residence por- tions, where necessary.
