Fred Jordon, he of the goniol to his “stamping grounds” in this Mr. and Mrs. I. Young, parents of Mrs. W. L. Preble, returned this morning to their home at Brainerd, after having visited for several days at the Preble home in this city. J. M. Schweizer of Crookston, assistant superintendent of the north- ern division of the G. N. railway, was over from Crookston last night looking after some matters of interest to his company. J. W. Bush (“Bill”) came up last evening from his home at Brainerd and spent the night in the city as the guest of his son, Charles, who is employed at the local office of the Swift Packing company. Reserved seats for the school en- tertainment may be had at the City drug store, where they were placed on sale this morning. Regular ad- mission tickets may be exchanged for reserved seat tickets by the pay- ment of 10 cents additional. P. A. Walsh of International Falls, the efficient sheriff of Kooch- iching county, passed through the city this morning to Brainerd. He had in custody Christ Wingren, the homesteader, who shot a neighbor on Thursday, mistaking him for a moose. The dramatic playlet of “Drifting Apart,” given at the Bijou last evening, met with prolonged ap- plause. Miss Addison and Mr. Haynes both proved themselves artists. The amateur part of th= program, given by Fenton and Boyer, was of exceptional merit and was well received. Sam Cone, traveling representa- tive for the L. S. Loeb company of Duluth, came down this morning from Big Falls. Sam states posi- tively that he has organized a new aid at the “Falls,” and that both the successful and defeated candi- dates at the late village election at that place had been placed on the honorary list, pending good behavior before they are taken in as active members. Miss Alice Mills, who is teaching in the schools at Walker, came up last evening from Walker for an over-Sunday visit with her parents in this city. J. E. Wilkin of Cass Lake, the general agent for the Fitger Brewing company of Duluth, came over from his home yesterday afternoon and left last evening on a business trip to Farley. Peter Slough, he of the benevo- lent dispositlon and kindly nature, came up last evening from his home at Nary, where he has conducted a large business in wood during the past winter. S. G. Stewart, one of the scalers and cruisers for the Mississippi River Lumber company (a branch of the Weyerhauser syndicate) left this morning on a business trip along the north line of the M. & I. J. P. Watson, the Big Falls booster,” arrived in the city yes- terday from St. Paul. He was ac- companied by Mrs. Watson and heir three children, the latter hav- ing just terminated a visit of a month with relatives at Barnum, Carlton and Duluth. J. H. Peterson of Crookston, better known as “Henry,” spent yesterday in the city. Besidesbeing a director in the Scandia-American bank at Crookston, Mr. Peterson is inter- ested in the National Conserve com- pany of Milwaukee. He is a popular fellow and has many friends oyer the north half of the state. William Herrmann, engineer on the Bemidji-International-Falls local freight train, has taken a “lay off” and will be off duty for the next month, during which time he will visit with friends at Morris, Herman and Minot. While he is gone, Leo Poppenburg of Nymore will pull the throttle on the north-end freight locomotive, I A large crowd of lumberjacks got off the south-bound M. & I. passen- ger train this morning, having come from the different lumber = camps along the north line. Many of the logging camps up north are breaking up for the season, while others are gradually finishing their cut, with the result that many men are being discharged and a number are quit- ting. During the next two or three weeks the exodus of men from the north country will probably number into the thousands and Bemidji will undoubtedly have her share of transient laboring men for some time to come. John Morrison, Jr., who is owner of a store at Red Lake agency, in partnership with O. Gravelle, came down yesterday from the agency and spent the dayin the city, on busi- ness. Thomas J.Tohnson, the contractor, left last evening for Two Harbors, to visit his two daughters, Myrtle and Elizabeth. Mr. Johnson will probally extend his visit to Slayton, Minn. Mrs. Percy Bronson of St. Paul, sister of Mrs. D. C. Breneman, re- turned to her home this wmorning, after haying spent several days in this city visiting with the family of D. C. Breneman. A. H. Harris, the traveling repre- sentative for the Melges Bros. com- pany, returned last evening from a business trip along the south line of M. & I railway, where ke did some excellent work for his company. Mrs. D. A. McFarland returned last evening, via Brainerd, from a visit with friends at Duluth. She was accompanied from Brainerd by Mr. McFarland, who went down to that place yesterday and met her on the return home. John R. Gustave Kulander, the Walker merchant, came in yesterday from a business trip to Ada. He was met here last evening by Mrs. Kulander, | who was accompanied from Walker by Mrs. John Belbin of that place. The entire party returned to Walker this morning. F. M. Pendergast, son of T. H. Pendergast, arrived in the city last evening from St. Paul, and will visit in the city for several days. Mr. Pendergast has but recently returned from a trip to Pierre, S.D., where he had been for several weeks. “Mort” says that he likes Pierre, but not so well as Bemidji. No Case on Record. Miss Mildred Woodruff, who is teaching school at Turtle River, came down from that place -this morning for a visit with friends in the city. - Earl Hazen (better known as “Reddy”) has attained the posi- tion of conductor on the M. & I. railway, after a steady service on that line as “braky.” Earl made his first trip in charge of a train, the first of the week, and his many friends here are pleased at his raise in the “ranks.” - He deserves it. Rev. Dale, pastor of the Nor- wegian Lutheran church at McIn- tosh, Minn., came over from his home yesterday noon and visited here with Rev. T. S. Kolste, pastor of the Bemidji Lutheran church. Rev. Dale left last evening for Littlefork, where he will organize a Norwegian Lutheran congrega- tion. % A. N. McIntosh, one of the best camp men in the north country, left last evening for his home at Northome. Mr. McIntosh spent most of the winter in the camps of the Grand Forks Lumber com- pany, near Blackduck, which sus- ‘pended operations a few days ago.
