When a child wakes up in the mid !lo of the night with a severe attack of croup as fre- quently happens, no tlme should be lost ln experimenting with remedies of a doubtful value. Prompt action ls ofton necessary to save life. Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy has never becn known to fail in any case and 1t has been in use for over one-third of 1 cen- tury. There IS none better. It cun be de- pendedupon. Why experiment? Itisplensant 10 take and contains no harmful drug. RUTLEDGE, Business Manager I Managing Bditor ntered in the postofice at Bemidji. Minn., 8 second class matter. SUBSCRIPTION---$5.00 PER ANNUM I “ADVICE TO THE YOUNG.” For some reason or other just at present there is an overplus of ad- vice to young men and young woman on the matter of courting. Almost every magazine you pick up contains a page or two of sapient stuff about how a young man should select his mate and how a young woman may know whether or not Harold is a true, noble youth and worthy of the wealth of affection she is ready togive the right man. She is warned not to encourage him too much, and on the other hand she is warned not to discour- age him too much. Elderly ladies who have been or have not been married write magazine articles which argue that courting is a cold-blooded proposition, that candy causes indigestion and roses are 2’ waste of money, while the theaters and dancing are nonsense. College professors deliver lectures to their classes and ministers preach ser- mons about wooing. Most of them hark back to the old-style novel for their hints, and. intimate that their idea of proper courtship is one that ends as the ancient novels did with some sach sentence as: “And then, the guests having departed, Lionel clasped his bride in his arms and pressed upon her lips their first kiss!” These things make good reading for old people with gout and rheu- matism and false teeth and wigs, but the young folks are so busy flirting and sparking and innocently “keeping steady company” that it will be a good many years before they can be reached by the ad- vice. OBSERVATIONS. [By "Doc”] Neptune rules the fleet, we are told. Well, we’d rather have Nep on the job than Bacchus. A lawyer argued yesterday that ice creamisa luxury. Any man who has not forgotten his courting days knows better than that. President Roosevelt is to open the “tubes” that will shoot residents of Hoboken into lower New York. Will Wall street consider this another attack? The kingly sense of humor appears not unlike that which inspires the Sunday supplements. Alfonso of Spain was “highly amused” when a policeman who had mistaken him for a' suspicious character was knocked down and beaten. According to that Paris barber, Count Boni fough “like a sparrow.” We know nothing about the pug- nacity of French sparrows, but the world may understand that any such comparison is a serious re- flection upon the“courage of the American bird. I ——— QUESTION HARD TO SOLVE Transatlantic Passenger Rate War Is Still Unsettled. London, Feb. 8—The committee which was appointed to complete the details of the transatlantic shipping agreement, by which the steamship companies engaged in the transatlan- tic passenger trade are to put an end to the rate war, experienced some disficulty at its session and adjourned without reaching an agreement. The difficulty in question had to be re- ferred to the higher authorities of tis steamship companies concerned, but confldence is expressed that it will be overcome. Accident Due to Carelessness. Chicago, Feb. 8.—Thres men were fatally injured and several others sert- ously hurt by an explosion of dyna- mite in the quarries of Dolese & Step: ard in the suburb of Hawthorne. The explosion was caused by the careless- ness of FRichard Scheoburd, a work- man, who rammed the explosive too tightly in a hole which he had drilled | *%) for a blast. Scheoburd’s face was blown entirely-off and he wad wise mangled. Indictments in Bank Ca Washington, Pa., Feb. 8.—The grand Jury which has bean investigating al- leged frregularities in the affairs of the People's bauk of California, Pa., recently suspended, returned seven in. dictments. One of the indictments, against O. F. Piper, former cashier, contained 199 counts. BRIEF BITS OF NEWS. Prince Ernest, the reigning duke of Sachsen-Altenberg, is dead in Ber- lin. Ten persons were injured in a wreck on the Pennsylvania road near Frank- lnville, N. Y. The January statement of the Brit- ish board of trade shows decreases of $20,832,600 in imports and $3,314,000 in exports. “Battling” Nelson and James Britt have signed articles for a ten-round fight in Los Angeles on the night of Tuesday, Feb. 25. Dispatches to Dun’s Trade Review indicate that seasonable weather is helping retail trade, but there is no disposition to anticipate future re- quirements. The (erman reichstag has passed the Brussels sugar convention. It adopted also a resolution to reduce the existing duty on sugar from 14 to 10 marks per hundredweight beginning in April, 1909.
