Williams, a traveling sales- man of Minneapolis, made this city yesterday. He has made Bemidji regularly ever since it was started and has watched the rapid growth with interest. He speaks highly o the way Bemidji has grown. Chicago, Dec. 1 .—Chicago has one more square mile of “dry” territory than it had. The square mile, almost 1 per cent of the entire city, was add- ed to the prohibition area by the clty council. No oratory marked the addition to the city’s prohibition district. With- out comment other than that the dis- trict had been canvassed and that pro- hibition was the desire of its residents the vote was ordered taken. The re- sult was that by 37 ayes to 25 nays Chicago is 1 per cent drier than ever before. Makes Optimistic Prediction. Cleveland, Dec. 1 .—The re-employ- ing of 756 per cent of the men now laid off in metal trades shops and factories over the country is predicted for the first few weeks of the new year by P. H. Frankel, secretary of the Na tional Metal Trades association. The same optimistic statement is also in- cluded in the association’s regular re- port to its members, who have felt the effects of the stagnation since Oc- tober. Durango, Colo., Dec. -1 .—The Smel- ter City bank of Durango, a state in- stitution, capitalized at $30,000, failed to open its doors, No statement of its assets or labilities has been given out, but the deposits are believed not to exceed $100,000. Charles McCon- nell, president of the bank, said that all Habilities would be paid in full.
