Transatlantic Steamship War Is Be- coming General. New York, Aug. 28.—Shipping men | are watching with interest the trans- atlantic steamship war, which contin- ues to grow, Every day has lts devel- opments now, as one line after anoth- er cuts the rate. If the conflict keeps up much longer bargain hunters will get a chance to go to Europe on shop- ping expeditions at cheap rates. The causes of the fight are many and varled. The steerage rate war, which brought the trouble to a head, is the direct result of the refusal of one of the continental lines to per- mit the Russian volunteer fleet to en- ter the steamship conference and thus have access to the conference agent and the general business. The so- called conference was established by agreement among the lines for the purpose of settling thelr differences, distributing business and maintalning rates. It has now collapsed. Other alleged causes for the fight are the entrance of the new Cunarder Lusitana into competition and the trouble which started months ago over a protest-by the German lines against the White Star line’s minimum rate for steamers of the Arabic and Baltic class boats that draw the finest class of tourists, but for which the company demands a differential on account of the slower speed of these steamers. FIVE YEARS IN PRISON. Gentlemanly Burglar Sentenced at Westchester, Pa. Westchester, Pa., Aug. 28.—Judge Butler sentenced Dr. Benjamin Hol- brook, who was convicted of robbing schoolhouses and rallway stations, to five years' imprisonment. Dr. Holbrook may well be called the “Raffles” of Pennsylvania. By day he was a well bred, courteous physi- clan and could be seen driving behind a spanking team or paying a visit to some of his neighbors. By night the doctor become an audaclous burglar, looting railway stations for miles around Coatesville, where he made his home. The first robbery was committed at Wye Brooke, which was followed by others at frequent intervals as daring and as puzzling as the first. He was suspected and flnally ar- rested on June 15 by a railroad detec- tive. Holbrook made a full confession, admitting among other things that he was engaged to marry two young wo- men. STRIKE OF TELEGRAPHERS Prospects of Settlement Seem Remote as Ever. New York, Aug. 28.—Prospects of a mutually satisfactory settlement of the telegraphers’ strike appear to be no more promising than they were a weok ago. “We are going to keep up the strug- gle until the business interests of the country force congress to act,” said President Small of the Telegraphers’ union. “We will be able to hold on until the next session of congress. I do not believe the telegraph compa- nies can hold out much longer.” BRIEF BITS OF NEWS.
