They went to Turtle River today and will spend a month in the island in the lake. Jesse Dade, the mayor of Black- duck, came down from his home this morning and spent today in the city. He brought the general elec- tion ballots cast in Blackduck in November, 1906, so-that they might be recounted by the commission making the recount for the con- stitutional amendment. “Boy; good big fellow, too. Looks just like his dad.” It was thus that J. A. Hoff, the painter and decorator, accosted his friends yes- terday, while explaining his reason for passing around cigars. Which, being interpreted, means that Mrs. Hoff presented her liege lord with a bouncing baby boy yesterday, and J. A.’s cup of joy was unconstrained. Nels Otterstad ‘came down this morning from his home at Turtle River and will go to the Rainy River country where he will locate some parties on timber claims. F. A. Witkins and wife of Carlton are among the out-of-town visitors who are attending the Bible Con- ference. Mr. Watkins is judge of probate of Carlton county. Miss June Hyatt, who makes her home at Fowlds with her parents, was in the city yesterday and left last evening for a visit with friends at Turtle River, her old home. C. L. Lasher returned last night from Albert Lea, where he went to establish a moving picture show. He has succeeded in putting in a first-class family theatre, calling it the “Family Bijou,” and his son Guy is now in charge. John P. Rust, who owns a farm on the Battle river, passed through the city last evening on his return to Battle River from a visit at his old home, Minneapolis. Mr. Rust was at one time driver of a street car in the “Mill” city. Mark Devine, the Blackduck dealer in cedar and other timber, came down from his home yester- day evening, on the local south- bound M. & I. freight train. He did some lively hustling and was able to catch the north-bound pass- enger train and return home an hour after arriving here, Solon Finley left this afternoon for Kalispell, Mont., where he has accepted a position as superintend- ent of logging operations for the Kalispell Lumber company. Solon is one of the very best all-around loggers in the country, and the Kalispell company has secured a valuable man in Mr. Finley. Mr. Daly has disposed of his business interests at Big Falls, and the Big Falls Compass says of the deal: “T. H. Daly has disposed of his entire stock of merchandise to Schnider Bros. of Bemidji who in turn sold the stock of shoes to Sol- berg Bros., of this place. The re- maining stock ‘was shipped to Bemidji.” E. Hawes, the advertising agent for the Danville & Kasper Amuse- ment company, which shows here next week, wasin the city today, arranging for advertising-the week’s entertainment. . He assures the Pioneer that his company isa far different organization from the T. I. Cash Carnival company. which created such a frost here last sum- mer, J. T. Dolan, he of the expressive countenance, has again resumed his territory for a Superior cigar concern. Jack was absent for three weeks, during which time he visited Platt- ville, Wis., and Dubuque, Iowa, and as near as can’be found out, all the hired girls are still working at those places. George Snyder and wife of Virginia arrived in the city last night and this morning went to Walker, where they-will visit for a week. Mr. and Mrs, Snyder are former residents of Walkey, T. M. Partridge, of the T. M. Partridge Lumber company, came up last evening from his home in Minneapolis to observe how matters were progressing in his - various interests hereabouts. Harry Funson, a civil engineer in the employ of George Huss, who has charge of the building of the Big Falls-International Falls extension of the M. & L railway, spent yester- day in the city and left last evening for Big Falls. E. J. Keating, the Crookston com- mercial traveler for his own concern, and who has the\large capacity for several things, including a huge bunch of good nature, spent last night in the city and went south with the early birds this morning. The local team has another catcher who will appear with the team on Sunday and play either behind the bat with Louie Roy or cover one of the fields. Manager Otto will pitch, and the big fellow is in excellent condition. The Walker team this season is the strongest that place ever had. In addition to having Edward Rogers, he of the_spit ball, the club has got Pippen, formerly a catcher, to do twirling this year, and he is doing fine work. The team has fine new uniforms and make a ‘“swell” appearance on the field. Tom Shevlin, Jr., of Minneapoiis, the big big fellow who is learning the practical part ‘of the lumbering industry by actual work in different concerns which his father owns, arrived in the city last evening. Mr. Shevlin is of a retiring” disposition and is a fine young fellow. The Crookston ? Journal says of Mr. Shevlin’s visit here: ““Thomas Shevlin Jr., son of the lumber magnate, came up this morn- ing from Minneapolis and proceeded to Bemidji where he will attend to business matters. It is rumored that he is to be made the manager of the mill at Bemidji to succeed J. M. Richards.” Fair Meeting Friday Evening. The meeting called for last evening to begin the preliminary work of holding a county fair was not well attended, and it was decided to adjourn the meeting until Friday evening, when it is hoped that there will be a larger attendance. _ Everyone is urged to attend the meeting, which will be held at the city council chambers at 8 o’clock.
