John Morrison, the man who is held in the greatest esteem by the Indians on the Red Lake Indian reservation, and who is popular with all his friends, came in last night from a visit to Mahnomen, the new town on the White Earth Indian reservation. Mr. Morri- son states that business is boom- ing at Mahnomen. G. A. Walker, local agent for trip to the Canadian Northwest, the “land of promise” (according to the land man.) Mr. Walker went as far north toward the pole at Edmunton, and was duly impressed with the greatness therecf. Newcomb, the traveling auditor for the Northern Express company, came down this morn- ing from visiting points along the north line of the M. & I. and proceeded south to continue his checking up. - John Schultz, the traveling auditor for the M, & I. railway, passed through the city this morning from up-line points and left for Walker and other stations on the M. & I., to check up local agents of the company. W. H. Strachan, superintend- ent of the M. & I, came in last night on the local freight train from Big Falls and spent the night in the city, He left this morning for Brainerd, his private car, “50,” being attached to the regular south-bound passenger train. George Garrigan, who has been visiting in Bemidji for the past two weeks with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Garrigan, left this morning for his home in Kansas City. He came here for the purpose of attending the funeral of his brother, John Garrigan, who met a tragic death as the result of the acci- dent on the Red Lake railway, on the 13th inst. William Masterson of this city and E. D. Stewart of Blackduck have returned from Edmunton, Northwest Canada, where they took a carload of horses for sell- ing purposes. Pittsburg, May 23.—Two Americans, well known mill men, and three for- eigners were cremated and four for- eigners were fatally burned when an explosion occurred at the Eliza fur- nace of the Jones & Laughlin Steel company.
