SECOND TIME IN SIX MONTHS Vessel Had but Recently Been Placed In Commission After Repairs Neces- sitated by Grounding Off the Mid- way lIslanas. Tokio, April 23.—The Pacific Mail steamer Mongolia ran aground during the morning near Mayeda lighthouse, In the province of Nagato, Japan. The locality is tull of reefs. The steamer, with a list of 45 degrees, lies quite close to the shore, within reach of rescue from all directions. Her prox- imity to the land prevents any possi- ble loss of life. The accident was caused by an attempt to avoid col- lision with a sailing ship. The Mongolia is a twin screw steamer with a registered tonnage of 13,639 tons. She was built in New York for the Pacific Mail Steamship company in 1904. She has but recent- 1y been put in commission again after repairs necessitated by grounding on a reef off Midway islands, on which she struck on Sept. 16 last. She was floated again without outside assist- ance on Sept. 21. On her present trip she was homeward bound from Yoko- hama. DEATH SENTENCE AFFIRMED “Lord” Barrington Loses. Appeal to | Highest Court. ‘Washington, April 23.—In an opin- fon by Chief Justice Fuller the su- preme court of the United States dis- missed the criminal case of Frederick Seymour, alias “Lord” Barrington, un- der sentence of death in St. Louis on the charge of murdering James P. McCaun In the outskirts of that city in June, 1905, in effect afirming the decision of the supreme court of Mis- souri and thus sustaining the verdict of guilty returned by the trial court. The case has heen before the public for several years and has attracted much attenticn, largely because of Barrington’s pretense of bearing an English title, under which, shortly be- fore the tragedy with which his name is connected, he married a young lady of good family residing in Kansas City. Barrington made a vigorous fight In the St. Louis courts, contendinz that his conviclion was due to preju- dice and that the charge was not sus- tained by vroof. When the Missouri supreme court decided against him he brought the case to the federal su- preme court on a writ of error, con- tending that his trial had not been fair. MAY END LONG DEADLOCK Republican Com ee Favors Colt for Senator. Providence, R. I, April 23.—After thirteen weeks of deadlock, during which time fifty-six ballots have been cast for a United States senator to succeed George Peabody Wetmore, the Republican state central commit- tee declared in favor of Colonel Sam- uel P. Colt of Bristol and urged that all Republican members of the gen- eral assembly cast their votes for the man who throughout the deadlock has polled the majority of the party votes. While the action of the state central committee is not binding upon the members of the general assembly it is believed that the end of the deadlock will come shortly and that Colonel Colt will be elected. The vote of the committee favoring Colonel Colt’s election was 9 to 4. The Republicans have 69 votes in the joint ussembly against 41 Demo- crats. TWENTY-FIVE DROWNED. River Steamer Sinks During Storm Near St. Petersburg. ‘ St. Petersburg, April 23.—While the rlver steamer Archangelsk was cross- ing the Neva near here she struck an ice floe, which was hidden by a blind- ing snow storm, and sank. It is be- leved twenty-five persons were drowned as a result. The Archangelsk was condemned as unseaworthy last fall, but the owner was able to-have the ban removed and the vessel placed in service. The crew was made up of three inexperienced men, the captain and pilot having for- merly been a balker. All three of the men were saved. Over Thirty Buildings Burned. Grand Rapids, Mich,, April 23.— Kent City, fifteen miles north of Grand Rapids, with a population of 300 people, was swept by fire, a large part of the village being completely destroyed.
