MISAPPROPRIATED $70,000. Charge Made Against Congressman Adams, Who 8uiclded. Philadelphia, Jan. 18.—Charges that the late Congressman Robert Adams, Jr., of this city, who committed sui- cide in Washington last year, was a defaulter to the amount of $70,000 have been made in the orphans’ court here. The assertion was made during an argument in surcharge proceedings brought against H. Carleton Adams, surviving executor and trustee of the estate of his father, Robert Adams, Sr., by his stepmother, Mrs. Robert Adams, Sr.,, and his stepsister, Mrs. Charles Moran of New York. Counsel for H. Carleton Adams told the court he would show that Con- gressman Adams had appropriated to his own use $70,000 worth of bonds belonging to the estate and to H. Carleton Adams. It was stated that the congressman and H. Carleton Adams hadfpeys to a safe deposit box in which thé missing bonds had been kept and that five years ago H. Carleton Adams had dis- covered that Pennsylvania canal bonds were missing. He notified his brother and the matter was fixed up. Subse- quently H. Carleton Adams’ condition became such that he could not attend to business and matters were left to the congressman. EARTHQUAKE AT MANILA. Accompanied by -Tidal Wave That Broke Over Harbor Works. Montgomery, Ala., Jan. 18.—Alfred D. P. Weaver of this city has, in col- laboration with John Edward Carney, and while engaged in laboratory ex- periments in search of a new coherer material for wireless telegraphy, dis- covered the art of hardening and tem- pering the precious and semi-precious metals, such as platina, gold and the like, without alloying them with other metals. The characteristic results obtained by Mr. Weaver’s process are the enor- mous reduction in the fusing point of those metals and the imparting to them of a degree of hardness, in some instances surpassing that of the best tool steel when hardened. Platinum, one of the most refractory of metals, heretofore requiring for its fusion the oxy-hydrogen flame, or the voltaic are, is, after being subjected to the new process, easily melted be- fore an ordinary gasoline blow pipe and may be cast, again melted and recast indefinitely. So great a hardness is imparted to these metals by Mr. Weaver’s process FOLEY'S HONEYuoTAR The original | LAXATIVE cfiugh remedy, For coughs, colds, throat and lung troubles. No opiates. So | in treating the lagging, torpid liver it is | a great mistake to lash it with strong drastic drugs. A torpid liver is but an indication of an ill-nourished, enfeebled body whose organs are weary with over work. Start with the stomach and allied organs of digestion and nutrition. Put them in working order and see how quickly your liver will become active, Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery has made many marvelous cures of “liver trouble” by its wonderful control of the organs of digestion and nutrition. It re- stores the normal activity of the stomach, increases the secretions of the blood-mak- i ing glands, cleanses the system from poi- sonous accumulations, and so relieves the liver of the burdens imposed upon it by the defection of other organs. 1t you have bitter o bad taste in the momn= !
