Brainerd, Minn., Jan. 17.— (Special to the Pioneer).—The de- fense in the Towers murder case made a strong showing yester- day and it seems the general opinion that the result will be an acquittal or a disagreement. The story of Hagadorn’s brother and his companions was badly shattered by the testimony of the four men who were in the saloon. [nstead of Towers being struck once, as sworn to by Fred Hagadorn, Snell and others, it was shown by three witnesses that he was struck several times before he fell. They said that he was kicked and struck while lying on the floor, until he be came unconscious. The defense claims that he was in a dazed condition from the ef- fects of the blows and kicks when the shooting occurred, and that he did not know what he was doing until he found himself in jail. It was shown that a fall 12 years ago caused temporary aber- ration, also that he had fallen two weeks before the shootir g and had severe pains in his head and other symptons of aberration since. The defendent testified in his own behalf that the last he re- membered was being kicked in the head as he lay on the floor until he found himself in jail. HARBOR OF KINGSTON IS SINKING INTO THE SEA Great Terror Lest the City Is Engulfed. —Business Portion Is Com- pletely Wiped Out. New York, Jan. 17.—(Special to the Pioneer.)—The shores of the harbor of Kingston, Jamaca, are sinking, and there isgreat terror, lest the city slip into the sea, according to private dis- patches received here by a large mercantile establishment from Port AuPrince, Hayti. The bed of the harbor is said to be sink- ing and the water in many places is now 100 feet deep. Every wharf which was not destroyed by fire is said to have sunk into the sea or to have been rendered worthless. Today, the number of dead at Kingston vary, accord- ing to estimates, from four to twelve hundred. All reports agree that the business portion of the city has been completely wiped out. The dead include many very prominent business men. Bids for Wood.
