By all means, bring “Billy”’ Sunday to Grand Rapids. “MINORITY CONTROL. That the twin cities realize the inequality of the present legisla- tive apportionment is shown by the attitude of the Minneapolis and St. Paul press, toward the agitation for a change. All of the the city papers favor a re-ap- portionment, and doubtless the house and sepate members from the cities will work for it, with the legislators from the northern part of the state. The Minne- apolis Journal expresses the gen- eral sentiment (outside of south- ern Minnesota) when it says: The question of legislative re- apportionment in Minnesota, simmered down, means that the minority of the people now have a majority of the representation in thelegislature. That minority, therefore, controls the situation, and can prevent a readjustment that will give equality. It all de- pends on whether this minority, as represented by the majority of the legislature, is ready to make Some sacrifice in the inter- ests of justice and fair play. The inequality is most glaring in the:state senate. They are si1xty-three senators, and thirty- two of them, elected from the first, second and third congres- sional districts, and most of the seventh, represent a constituency of 741,184 people. The other thirty-one senators look after the interests of 1,236,267 people. In other words, 37 per cent of the people of the state elect a ma- jority of the senate, and have more voice in that body than the other 63 per cent. In the house more care has been taken to grant equality, hut the counties south of the twin cities and including Ramsey, have 600f the 119 house members, with a population of 904,802. The other fifty-nine members of the house are elected by a con- stituency of 1,072,599. A major- ity of the house 18 elected by 45 per cent of the pgople. There are districts in southern Minnesota that ought not tu be changed or lose any representa- tion, and there are some in the northern part that have enough, but in general terms there is a great wrong done the northern portion, and the older counties in the south have more than their fair share, The solution of the problem rests with the minority. The majority ' is- asking for equal representation. Surely the minority can do nothing but con- cede it. A Queer Plny In Baseball, 4 | Here is a play in baseball that hap- pened long ago. Perhaps it never will bappen again. Did any one ever hear | of a base runner scoring from first base on a line drive that was caught by a third baseman and when the ball never left the third baseman’s hand? The play happened In this way: Andy Moynihan was playing third base for the Pastimes of Chicago In 1868 when a tournament was held. The Occiden- tals of Peoria were the opposing team. | In the first inning, with a runner on first, the batter drove a liner straight over third. Moynihan shoved up his hand, the ball struck it and stuck fast In the hand. The crowd cheered. An instant later they saw something was wrong. . Moynihan, writhing with paln, was running around third base, | The base runner at first saw something was the matter and ran down to sec- ond. Then he ran to third and finally trotted home unmolested. The trouble was that the ball, strik- Ing Moynihan’s hand, paralyzed the nerves, - The.ball was stuck tight in his hand.
