He is the hardest worked employe on the paper and draws the smallest pay check at the end of the week, He is bossed by the manager, the editors, the joband the news foremen, the assistant job men, the compositors; in short, by everybody in the shop. He is expected to be in two places at once, and have a dozen feet and as many hands. He is ex- pected to be a veritable Mercury for speed, and to rival a German scientist for accuracy, and when he does display a little of the “kid” and moves too slow or mkes a mistake, he is expected to submit to a cussing with angelic meekness, and not answer back. The poor printers’ devil! THE SUNDAY PAPER. One of the most interesting columns published in the state is that in the St. Paul Dispatch, written by the dean of all Minne- sota newspaper workers, H. P. Hall: Under the heading ‘“Ob- servations,” “Dad” Hall dis- cusses a variety of topics every day ic a highly interesting way. The other day he got to talking about Sunday newspapers, and declares that the Sunday paper has come to stay: I do not think a religious crusade could be started strong enough to warrant any publisher in the country in stopping work- ing on Sunday, provided he had any regard for his bank account, he says. Of course, b-tween a bank account and going to heaven, the bank account will win in newspaper or any other work. It is doubtless true the Sun- day paper will contine with us, and it is too' bad it is true. But the Sunday issue is the one that makes the money. Inmany instances it makes more than all the “other six issues combined. Quite naturally no publisher would want to part with such a golden-egg-laying goose. Nevertheless, the Sunday paper is an abomination, and quite aside from the fact that it is printed on Sunday. Asa mat- ter of fact, meost of the work on the big issue is done during the week and on Saturday night. It is an abomination because it is filled “’full of cheap reading, which, while it may be diverting for’ the moment, it is really & waste of time to peruse. People get the Sunday newspaper habit of réading, and gradually become unfitted for more serious writ- ings. - Men who have been rather 5 provement ON EASY PAYMENTS For the man or woman of moderate means we are offering lots in the third addition on easy monthly payments. Someé are better than others. But ‘the indictment holds’ true against the greater majority of them. No doubt the week-day issues of the big dailies need elevating in ‘many instances, but they are largely ‘devoted to the news of the day and comments thereon; things that a man must read to keep abreast of the times. The Sunday issue does not pretend to devote a very large space to news. It is filled full of sporting ‘‘dope,”’ sensational gossip about plutocrats and aristocrats, special articles on silly topics written by silly people, morbid discussions of murders and murderers, with photographic illustrations, etc., ete. The Influence of the Farm, bave for our social well being, and whatever promotes interest whatever raises it in intelligence and scientific spirit, is one of the most comforting influences of our civiliza- tion. And so to have our young men imbued with the true agricultural spir- it, to turn away from the adventures of the commercial life and the allure- ments of mere money making to the simple, productive, independent life on the farm, is one of the richest promises in our educational system. For there is where it belongs—to the expanding mind force of the nation. The finest triumphs of the next fifty years, re- sults that will go further than all other enterprise in blessing men, will be won on the farm. There is a science of soil culture, and the art that is to be based upon it will open wide the door to men of thought and refinement. A full grown buffalo bull stands about five feet eight or ten Inches at the shoulder and welghs about 1,80C pounds. But specimens of over six feet at the withers have been recorded, and Mr. Hornaday tells me that he welghed a living bull at 2,190 pounds. A full grown cow stands about four feet elght at the shoulders and, accord- ing to Audubon, weighs about -1,200 pounds, though Henry says seldom over 700 or 800 pounds.
