INDICTED IN IOWA ON SERIOUS CHARGE, ESCAPED FROM JAIL Arrives in City at 2:30, at 3:30 Is Safely Locked Up in Jail. Bert Brannick, wanted in Alli- son, Iowa, on a grave charge, said to have been committed in 1902, was arrested by Deputy Sheriffs John Bailey and Art Wright yesterday in this city. Brannick was under indictment in Allison when he broie jail and wade his escape, and for the last four years an Iowa sheriff and the Beltrami authorities have been on the lookout for him. Five years ago Brannick lived in] Bemidji, and it has alwdys been believed that sooner -or later his desire to visit his old home would get “the better of his judgment, and that the fugitive would re- turn. Brannick arrived yesterday afternoon on the delayed Great Northern passenger from the west which did not arrive until 2:30. An hour later he was be- hind prison bars. Immediately upon striking town Brannick started in toallay the needs of the inner man, and was lined up at the bar at “Happy” Anderson’s when Deputy Sheriff John Bailey walked in. He noticed Brannick, and some- thing about the man struck him as being familiar. One glance excited another, and he edged up closer to get & better look at the stranger, Deputy Sheriff Art Wright was also in the saloon and noticing Bailey staring at the man at the bar, he began to take notice of him also. ‘Do you know who I think that is?” he said at length. “That’s Bert Brannick.” “That’s . just who it is,” answered Baley: T The two deputies watched the learning: from the bartender that: 1t-was the man they suspected, and no mistake, they followed him down Minnesota avenue to Third street, and down Third street to Beltrami, where they placed him under arrest, Brannick at first refused to come and steadily denied his identity, but finally accompanied the officers quietly to jail, where he confessed to being the long wanted man from Allison. He admitted being under indict- ment, but maintained that he had not broke jail. After a talk with Deputy Juhn Bailey, the prisoner decided to go back to Iowa without requisi- tion papers, and Sheriff A. W. Johnson of Allison, Iowa, is now on his way to this city. Incidentally there is a reward of $150 out for Brannick’s cap- ture. Amusements. There is & new rival to Ole Oleson and Yon Yonson. He is Pete Peterson, and he will be re- ceived with open arms by all classes of theatre-goers as Elmer Waiters’ most popular attraction when presented at the opera house. Elmer Walters has never failed to deliver a satisfying show, and in Pete Peterson he has maintained his reputation and out done all previous efforts. The new Swedish character is not the customary green horn. Pete has been in America long enough to read the Eonglish language, aud he devotes all his spare moments to devovring dime novels, for Pete wants to be a detective. He is even more of a comedy character than all his predecessors, Like them, he sings a song or two, and is also on hand when rescue work is needed. The villian is a patent medicine fakir who offers to make the heroine a ‘‘queen of society” and cuts out a clergy- man who is in love with the girl, and induces the heroine to elope, with the assistance of her weak- minded mother. The medicine man promptly deserts the heroine and her baby, and she is only saved from suicide by the rompt appearance of Pete. ur beautifal d&)gs h:;e im'; portant parts, and go throug! their rolea with enthusiasm and thorougbness.. Pete Peterson should prove one of the best attractions at. the opera house this evening, man ontil he left the saloon, then
