But depression. yesterday the word of Bryan might have stood against the whole democratic pariy; now there are none so poor to do him reverence, That the drift is surely setting against the once-popular idol is conclusively proven by the events of the last month or two. Bryan’s influence has been on o the wane ever since that New York public ownership speech, but it was not so apparent until the nomination of Hearst for governor of New York by the democrats, when the man of many newspapers almost imme- diately surplanted the former leader in the public imagination. Fresh proof of the waning of the Bryan star was given a few days ago when the state of Texas started a presidential boom for Governor Johnson of Minnesota, A month or two ago to have men. tioned Johnson, even had he just made a phenomenal run for office in his own state, or to have men- tioned Hearst as presidential . | probabilities, would have pro- voked a shake of the head. If the legislature this winter follows the popular demand, the primery election law will be ex. tended so as to include the nomin- ation of state officers, as well as congressmen and county and city officers. The politician-manipulated, and often corruptly-manipulated con- vention, must go. We have got along under 1t for many years, ‘but once having been given a taste of the primary election, we will never be satisfied until it is applied to every office, hlgh and low, in the state. The law as it stands now has many defects, and these are urged against any further exten- sion. Perhaps the most glaring fault is the laxity which allows the members of one party to vote the ticket of the other party and 8o dictate the nomination, where the contest is at all close. This happened in Minneapolis a few years ago, when the democrats forced the notorious Dr. Ames onj the republicans, and it hap pened again this year when the democrats ‘of the Second con- gressional district voted in great numbers ‘for McCleary, as the weakest of the two republican candidates, and then siaughtered him, with the aid of disaffected republicans, at the general election. If there is a remedy for this imperfection, it should be applied befors a law is passed making nomination of state officers at the primary possible; but it there is not, or if one cannot be found at the present time, the primary law should be extended anyway. The primary of today, with all its faults, is' not so bad, by a long ways, as the political convention. For instance, take the election just closed.
