THE BEMIDJI DAT VOLUME 4. NUMBER 174 BEMIDJ1, MINNESOTA, FRIDAY EVENING, NOVEMBER 9, 1906 LY PIONEER. TEN CENTS PER WEER INDIAN GOIN BEING SPENT IN THIS GITY Bemidji Reaping Rich Harvest From Payment at Red Lake Agency. MANY OF THE REDS SPENDING IN LOCAL STORES THIS WEEK More of Money Going for Provisions and Clothing Than Ever Before. Bemidji merchants are reaping the benetits of the payment made trthe Red Lake Indians, in the manner of a brisk business with the reds. Last night, more than 100 men, women and children came down onthe M, R. L. & M. train and spent the night in the city. They were members of the Red Lake and Leech Lake bands, all of whom are really Red Lakers. The Leech Lakers went to Red Lakea week ago, and are re- turning now, at the conclusion of the payment and the usual social functions that accompany that event. For years a payment has always resulted in many drunken Indians -and squaws, at times serious fights and at all times more or less gambling. This year, however, it is said the pay- ment passed off with compara- tive quiet. There was less drunkenness and but little doing in the fighting line, The payment was of such pro- portions that each adult Indian received quite a *‘roli,”” and with the usual aboriginal instinct will not be content until he has sepa- ratad company with his ‘‘coin.” But the money is going, for the greater part, for provisions and clothing. $100,000 DEAL REGORDED [¢PENDY"" HELPED WIN |BREAKS SHOULDER BLADE IN HflRTH_fi_llllNTBY LAND COUNTY Minneapolis Men Buy 30,000 Acres in Beltrami and ltasca A warranty deed was filed with Register of Deeds Harris|PENDERGAST HAS PLURALITY OF 303 IN 27 PRECINCTS. yesterday which indicated a deal m Beltrami and Itasca county lands involving 80,000 acres and a consideration of $100,000.
