No une ever accused the insur- ance men of being slow, but Be- midji has been growing so fast that she has them puffing to keep pace with her in their ratings. If you are in doubt.about those constitutional amendments, bet- ter not vote for them. Better not vote either for or against them, then you are sure you are not making a mistake. Ii Governor Johnsen had only displayed the same encrgy in making a record for himself dur- ing the year and nine months he has been chief executive that he displaysin campaigning the state and laying claim to all the good things accomplished by every other state officer, what a real record he might have had. Mr. Voter: Northern Minne- sota bas never had a governor that she could call one of her own citizens in all the state’s history. Every one of the men who have served as chief executive has hailed from one of the southern or central counties. Now we have a chance to elect a man from almost our own neighborhood. It is up to us. A FABLE WITH AN APPLICATION. Minneapolis Journal: One of Esop’s fables tells of a jackdaw that was very fond of ad miration. Finding some bright colored feathers on the ground, he stuck them in his plumage with great artistic effect, till he looked like a new and improved bird of para- dise, an apotheosis of bird. He strutted forth among the other birds, which were lost in wonder and admiration, till one| of them spied a familar feather. It was one of his own, and he plucked it angrily away. The other birds at once fell upon the baughty jackdaw, each taking from him ‘a feather that had fallen from his own plumage, and when they had finished, they found that the strange and glori- ous bird was nothing but a plain jickdaw, after all.” The fable is worth retelling, for its application to the present state campaign. TIMELY ADVICE. The article printed below, taken from an exchange, might well be heeded by certain men who are putting forth their efforts (weak, though they are) in trying to impress the outside world that Bemidji is like unto Sodom and Gomorrah ‘and the majority of her citizens ‘‘graf- ters” and robbers. Read it. The best man we have in our “| town for the general good of the town is the one you will always see on the front seat in the pro- gressive band wagon. He is the tirst one to extend an open and warm hand to greet the stranger and welcome him to the best town in the state. He will resent an insult to his town as quickly as he would a slur at a member of his own family. He very politely invites the chronic croaker to move on. Heis ever ready to give his just proportion to every public enterprise. He talks up our town at home and abroad and believes it the best place upon God’s green earth in whieh to live and desires to be buried here when he dies. Let us all try to be like this man for one year and our little city will take on new life and improve as never before in its history. cnicago, Oct. 25.— Wheat—Dec., T2%ec; May, 77%c. Louisville, Ky, Oct, 26.—Intense in- terest has been aroused in local whis key clrcles by the views on e rules of the pure food commission relative to the definition of “like substances”; expressed by Dr. H. W. Wiley, chlef chemist of the department of agricul ture and a member of the pure foud, comnussion, which promulgated the rules regulating the labeling of whis- key. The opinion of Dr. Wiley as ex- pressed in a-telegram is as follows: “The mixing of two whiskies would be a blend, but mixing a whiskey with neutral spirits would not be a blended whiskey, but might Le a blend of dis- tilled spirits. It vye whiskey is one @ constitucnts of a compound ot re, the mixture cannot be labeled rye whiskey.” It is said the effect of the enforce ment of the rules in accordance with Dr. Wiley’s opinion would mean a hard blow to the rectifying interests and it is pointed out that at present prices the change would mean a- dif: ference of 36 cents a gallon' to the rec. tifiers. - 1 Want Ads FOR RENTING A PROPERTY, SELL- ING A BUSINESS OR OBTAINING HELP ARE BEST.
