Entered In the postoffice at Bemidjl. Minn., a8 second class matter. SUBSCRIPTION---$5.00 PER ANNUM Mr. Johnson is eloquent, but “a man is just as eloquent when wrong as when he’s right. Hill and Harriman are at it again. The public doesn’t carea cuss which octopus eats the| on. other. Sic ’em, If the Crcokston Times is|Xe anxious to reform county politics, it need not go so far afield; let it begin in its own baliwick. The suspicion is growing that that Minneapolis bandit is just a Haynes supporter who wants to ‘“‘show up” Mayor Jones’ police. "The “Ichabod Crane” of the Enterprise office lost his temper again this week, and as usual when in such a plight, he is ex- tremely ludicrous. ; Says the Virginia Virginian: “Remember, girls, that there never would be any mashers on the street corners if there were no mashees on the streets.” Minnesotans who may long for the red hot times of the 1904 gubernatorial campaign, should step over into North Dakota. The pot is boiling over in Alex A local paper gives prominent space to the following extract from a “roast” by the Kelliher Journal: “We greatly admire the Bemidji Pioneer and the way it gets and gives its readers the news.” Many thanks. John Quincy Adams spent the longest and most fruitful years of his distinguished public ser- vice as an ex president member of the house of representatives. Why may not Roosevelt do like- wise as a member of the senate? Will the Crookston Times, which sees an alarming increase of crime in Beltrami county, kindly note that the county jail in this city was empty for tvo days this week. It would be in- teresting to learn how many prisoners there are in the county jail at Crookston. BEWARE THE SNARE. Mr. Johnson’s whole campaign is a play to catch the republican voter. He cannot be re-elected withouta stampede from the re publican ranks, no one knows it better than he, and from early morning until late night, the present chief executive and his workers are casting out their seductive bait in the hope of en- snaring deserters. But what excuse can any re- publican have this year for not voting for the nominee of his party, Mr. Cole? Two years ago the man who scratched the ticket had a motive; he was bitter over 'the outcome of the convention, or he saw, or thought he saw, a serious flaw in Dunn’s character as a public official. He voted for a democrat, not because he liked Mr. Johnson, but because he disliked Mr. Dunn, This year the repuvblican nom- inee is as near the ideal candi- date as could be chosen. He is honest, sincere in his desire to reform state ewils, a tireless worker, and a man withouta flaw to his record in public or private life. More than this, he is the champion of a cause dear to the hearts of the| men of northern Minnesota; he is essentially their candidate. There is no excuse for a republican anywhere in Minnesota voting against Mr. Cole, and much less is there any excuse for a republican in this part of the state doing so. A victory for Cole is & victory. for morthern Minnesota and for drainage. The Hesftant Swatn. He—What would your father do if I told him I wanted to marry you? ‘She ~He'd refer the matter to me. Stevenson’s Grave. i No English novelist rests in a more; eccentric spot than that chosen by Robert Louis Stevenson, who is buried on the summit of the forest clad Vaila, in the island of Samoa. The day after his death at Vailima, in 1804, his re- majins were carried to the top of this precipitous and picturesque peak by 1 sixty sturdy Samoans, who had loved and now mourned their dead chief, Tusitula. A party of forty had pre- viously cut a pathway through the thick, tangled wood with knives and axes, while another party had pre- pared the grave. With infinite care and trouble they bore him shoulder high over the rough ground to his last long home, and there, under the starry sky, they left him to sle~p forever, with the Pacific at his feet. On either side of his tombstone is a bronze plate. One bears the words, “The Tomb of Tusitula,” while the other is inscribed ‘with his own requiem, beginning: Under the wide and starry sky Dig the grave and let me lie.
