An old adage brought up to date: Look before you shoot. The general political apathy seems to have spread to the foot- ball fans. Mr. Cole is now campaigning on the Range and is said to be converting Johnson men at the rate of one a minute. Election is only three weeks off and the excitement is almost as intense as it is at a ball game when the scorestauds 15 to 0 in the eighth inning. Count Boni thinks his wife ought to hquidate his several million dollars worth of debts be- fore getting her divorce. And yet they say it takes an Ameri- can for gall. Richard Croker has not found the peace abroad that he ex- pected, and, according to re ports, is soon to return’ to America. Those impertinent English are too inquisitive as to where he got it, At the rate we are wasting our , | natural resources, says Mr. Hill warningly, we will, in fifty years, be approaching an ironless age, And yet no one man in the coun- try is doing more to hasten that lamentable day than Mr. Hill ¢ | himself. NO DANGER. The editor of the Bemidji Pioneer is astride the political fence, supporting both Cole and Pendergast We can only hope that if the Pioneer man does lose his balance he will fall the right way.—Walker Pilot. The Pioneer man is pretty well balanced, thank you. If it were not for a little joke now and then like the republican state central committee sending a circular letter to Governor Johnson asking him to support Mr. Cole, the campaign would become altogether too dry. Give us something funny occasionally, even if it is “‘on us.” The nerve of Fargo is superb, to say the least. For years it has been sendine its citizens over to Moorhead to get drunk, and now, because some of them insist on returning before the jag is worn off, and' disturbing the peace of the prohibition town; Fargo is thinking of levying'a toll on all drunks crossing the bridge to the Dakota side. ‘COMPARE THE TWO MEN. A. L Cole, the republican nominee for governor, will speak here next Monday, and the citi- zens of Bemidji will be given a chance to see and hear him and take his measure. They will find that he compares to advantage with another re-| cent distinguished visitor, Gov- ernor Johnson. - Mr. Cole may not be so graceful, or polished, or eloquent as the present chief executive, but he may be all the more.of a man for that. This much is certain; when he speaks his hearers are impressed with his honesty and his firm and sin. cere faith in the gospel he is preaching, whether it be drain- age and good roads, or railroad regulation, or some other state issue, No one should let slip this op- portunity to listen to, and pos- sibly shake hands with, the next governor of Minnesota. While Mr. Cole’s election may have appeared doubtfu! a month or two ago, he now looks like & winner. - The republican candi- date has to entice only 7,866, votes away from Johnson to make the score'even on the count, of 1904, and indications point toa/ heavy slump in‘the Johnson vote in Hennepin county and all through the southern part of the| state. ' Johnson cannot possibly gsin in ‘the northern counties, taken as & whole. E The American Buffalo, The buffalo is the bulkiest living land | animal native to North Amerlca. A | full grown buffalo bull stands about five feet eight or ten inches at the shoulder and weighs about 1,800 pounds. But specimens of over six feot at the withers have been recorded, and Mr, Hornaday tells me that he welghed a living bull at 2,100 pounds. A full grown cow stands about four feet elght at the shoulders and, accord- ing to Audubon, welghs about 1,200 pounds, though Henry says seldom over 700 or 800 pounds. The lower weight seems to be nearer the average run, but I have seen cows that stood as high and looked as heavy as ordinary | bulls, — Ernest Thompson Seton In Scribner’s, | Fish Sold Allve. Fleusburg, a seaport town on the east coast of Schleswig-Holstein, has an ex- cellent system of bringing to port fish which are intended for immediate con- sumption. Instead of packing the fish in the hold of the vessel the fishermen use flat, oblong boxes, drilled with holes to allow free access of water, and Into these the live fish are placed as A Bright Recralt. Lieutenant—Right.* And what should you do if you met a whole battalion of the enemy? Soldier—Shoot them dead, sir. Lieutenant—You couldn’t by yourself, You should fall back and give warning. What should you do If you met a cow belonging to the enemy? Soldier—S8hoot it deud, sir. Lieutenant—Wrong. Soldier—Fall back and give warning, sir. Clapp will speak at the OPERA HOUSE MON- DAY EVENING OCT. 22} All good republicans should turn out in force and hear their candidate for governor. He is a con- vincing speaker and is thoroughly in earnest in his determination to better conditions in the state, if he 1s elected. Senator Clapp is one of the most powerful ora- tors in Minnesota, and his speech will be worth going to hear. REPUBLICANS,RALLY The fact that S. S. S. is a purely vegetable preparation, containing not the slightest trace of mineral in any-form, has been one of the strongest points in its favor during its forty years of existence. It is recognized everywhere not only as the best of all blood purifiers, but the one medicine that can be taken with absolute safety by the youngest child or the oldest member of the family. Next in importance to removing the cause of any disease ig the condition in which the system is left after a course of medical treatment. Medicines containing mercury, potash or other strong mineral ingredients often do permanent injury by eating out the delicate lining and tissues of the stomach, producing chronic dyspepsia, unfavorably affecting the bowels and so damaging the system that even if the original cause of thehdimse has been removed, itdis lefthin such a deranged and weakened condition that the health isgpennanently impaired. S.S.S. $1,000 REWARD enjgys the distinctior;{ of \laleing the only blood }IF NOT PURELY medicine on the market that does not contain a mineral property in some form. Being made VEGETABLE. entirely of roots, herbs and barks it is absolutely ! harmless to any part of the system, and while curing disease adds strength and health to every part of the body. S. S. S. removes all poisons, freshens and.purifies the blood and gives better and more lasting results than any other blood medicine. S. S. S. is the very best treatment for Rheumatism, Catarrh, Scrofula, Sores and Ulcers, Skin Diseases, Contagious Blood Poison and all troubles due to an impure or poisoned blood supply. =~ Besides being the King of blood purifiers S. S. S, is the best and most invigorating of all Spuice: " ‘THE SWIFT SPECIFIC CO., ATLANTA, GA. . e THE SWIFT SPECIFIC CO., ATLANTA, GA= _ J. P.
