SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR Minnesota shouts for tariff re- vision and elects stand.pat con- gressmen, Iowa is consistent. It might be a good thing for Minnesota if stand-pattism were made an issue in state politics, asitis in Iowa. It doubtless would hasten the retirement of certain ‘‘revision upward’’ con- gressmen. “Dad” Pease of the Anoka Union says camping out is not for him. Doesn’t like the idea of rusticating with the flies and mosquitoes. Did he ever try a a couple of weeks on Lake Be- midji? Bet a cigar his “own domicile,” with his *‘garden full of fresh vegetables” would lose its charm. Mary McFadden of the Duluth News Tribune thinks it would take ‘“‘more than one little book- let to give the outside world any properidea of Bemidji'scharms.” The way Mary does like th town is something scandalous; but then the town likes Mary, and reads her clever column, too, first thing in the paper. Chris Peterson of Akeley is at St. Anthony’s hospital, suffering from an attack of appendicitis, having been brovght up from Akeley by his brother, Andrew Peterson. Medical aid was sum- moned here to examine Peterson and ascertain if it was advisable to perform an operation for the removal of the appendix. Peter- son had been ill for several days and the disease had so far ad- vanced that it was thought best not to perform an operation at present, and the sick man will be given medical treatment in the hope that the attack will be re- lieved without the operation. Essler Baby Dead. The little daughter which was born to Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Essler recently, died yesterday at 12 o’clock m. The little one, although apparently very well developed and healthy-looking, was lacking in vitality. Private services were held at the Essler residence yesterday afternoon -|and the body was interred in Greenwood cemetery. Ruth, another diughter of Mr. and Mrs. Essler, is also very ill. Big Logger in Town. Sam Simpson, one ‘of the heaviest loggers'in the north half of the state, was a visitor in the city yesterday. Last winter Simpson cut about ten million feet of pine on the Chippewa res- ervation east of CassLake, along the Cass river, which was sold under the terms of the Morris Chippewa law. The logs were dumpbd into the river and driven to Lake Winnibigoshish, being towed across the lake to the Mississippi river, and they will be driven from there on through the Poke- gama dam and southward: to Minneapolis, Combined with Simpson’s logs are a large number belonging to Irwin & O'Brien, making in all a drive of ‘twenty-three million; uite a ‘‘jag” of ‘‘raw material.”’ Simpson has a large steamboat which he is operating on Lake Winnibigoshish, and which was built last winter by G.
