A. W. Rundquist of Crookston| Washington, July 16.—Secretary Bhaw of the treasury department, on his return from New York, sent out telegrams to a considerable number of national banks throughout the country designating them as government de- positories and informing them that the government bonds to secure such de- posits as may be made with them must be placed with the government by the close of business next Wednes- day, July 18. Coincidentally with the designation of these new depositories the secre- tary has called the loan of the gov- ernment made to various financial in- stitutions, with state and municipal bonds as security, indicating his inten- tion to have government bonds sub- stituted for the state and municipal bonds now up as security. In order, however, not too seriously to contract the amount of morey in the banks Secretary Shaw will deposit with the new depositories in the neighborhood of $7,000,000 of the $10,000,000 now called In and secured by the state and municipal bonds. Secretary Shaw's action in requiring depository banks to put up govern- ment bonds as security for deposits, in place of state and municipal bonds, will have a tendency to increase the market price of government bonds. This, it is expected, will result in se- curing to the government a higher price for the new Panama issue than otherwise might have been offered. came down yesterday to call on friends, C. A.
