The state fair and the demo- crat state convention come the same week. This will interfere with the publicity given the con- vention, but it won’t make much difference; the convention will be a tame affair, Anybody who doubts the abil- ity of Bemidji’s citizens to ifor- l i | ' get political differences and get/ together for the good of the city, should attend the meetings of the Business Men’s club. This is the spirit that wins. It will mean more industries, more people, more money, and a greater and™ more prosperous Bemidji. Franklin on Catching Cold. It I8 well known, says the New York Evening Post, that Franklin made a particular study of colds and had his own theory about them, which we be- lleve 1s pretty much the theory of to- day. One of his assertions was that catching cold does not come from mere cold, but from unequal temperature over the body and from undistributed moisture. To prove this he made a number of observations on occasions when he did and did not suffer. A few of these follow: By putting on a damp shirt on a dry body—yes. By putting on a dry shirt on a wet body, though this wets the body ten times more—no. By sitting In a room where the floor has been newly washed—yes. By going into a river and staying there an hour (no sheets so wet)—no. By wetting the feet only—yes. By wetting all the clothcs through the body apd wearing them a whole day—no. = By sitting in a room against a crevice —yes. By sitting as long in the open air— no. Wedadings In Wales, Many and curlous were the old cus- toms in Wales relating to marriage. The following is an account of the bid- ding ceremony, an old custom which is said to be celebrated even to this day in rural parts of Wales: The bidder goes from house to house with a long pole and ribbons flying at the end of it, and standing in the middle floor in each house he repeats a long lesson with great formality. He mentions the day of the wedding, the place, the prepara- tions made, ete. The following is a specimen: “The intention of the bidder 1s this: With kindness and amity, with decency and liberality for — and -—, he invites you to come with your good will on the plate. Bring current mon- ey—a shilling or two or three or four or five—with cheese and butter. We Invite the husband and wife, children and menservants, from the greatest to the least. Come there early., You shall have victuals freely and drink cheap, stools to sit on and fish if we can catch them, but-if not hold us ex- cusable, and they will attend on you when you call upon them in return. They set out from such a place and #uch a place.” ARE YOU ILL? {witli Rheumatism, Backache, Kidney Trouble, Catarrh or any, other Blood Trouble?
