Washingten, June 1.—What is known as the Knox “immunity bill,” RS amended by the committee on judic- fary, was passed during the day by the senate. The measure was offered and reported from the committee after the recent sustaining of the immunity pleas set up by Chicago packers fol- lowing an investigation by the depart- ment of commerce and labor. The amendments were adopted by the com- mittee of the whole and the bill was about to be passed without debate when Senator Daniel called upon Sen- ator Knox for an explanation. The author of the measure said the pur- pose of the bill primarily is to make it clear that the commissioner of cor- porations may compel the production of books and papers of corporations, notwithstanding that the documents might incriminate the corporation, and that the incorporators should not be given immunity. The bill provides that “immunity shall extend only to a natural person who, in obedience to a Subpoena, gives testimony under oath or produces evidence, documentary or otherwise, under oath.” Estate Goes to University. San Francisco, June 1.—By the terms of the will of the late Theodore Kearney,- the noted raisin grower of Fresno, who died suddenly several days ago on the steamship Caronia from New York to Queenstown, his entire estate, valued at $750,000, is bequeathed to the University of Cali- fornia for the establishment of a viti- cultural station at Fresno. Rate Bill Conferees Begin at Tail and Work Backwards, ‘Washington, June 1.—It is stated that good progress was made on a number of features of the rate bill hy the conferees during the day. Senator Tillman, who by virtue of being in charge of the bill in the senate is the head of the senate conferees, said that having failed to make any progress at the head of the bill they had “begun on the tail and are working back- wards” and settling the smaller con- troversies first. After adjournment the various mem- bers -were met by a delegation of prominent negroes in opposition to the Warner amendment relating to “Jim Crow” cars. The amendment against which the Northern negroes have taken a stand provides that in- | iMay3l-June.9 Good till June 18 terstate passenger accommodations “equally good” shall be furnished all passengers. All negroes do not be- lieve this provision would cause Northern railroads to construct and operate separate cars for the races | unless compelled to do so, but they | fear it will serve as a suggestion to | Northern states to enact “Jim Crow” i laws similar to those of several South- ern states. The delegation told Sen- ators Elkins and Cullom and Represen- tative Sherman of New York that | prejudices against the negroes are rap- points in its favor during its forty years of existence.
