Water Tank Collapses and Causes ‘a Panic in a Store, New York, May 31.—By the collapse of a tank on the roof of Adams & Co.’s dry goods store in Sixth avenue, fol- lowed by a panic among customers and clerks, nearly a score of persons, mostly women, were more or less se- riously injured. The store was crowded when the tank, owing to the glving way of sup- ports, toppled over on a dome sky- light, covering a central court, pre- cipitating 10,000 gallons of water and | a shower of broken glass on the main floor. A number of clerks and cus- tomers were cut by fragments of glass and a panic ensued in which hundreds of women -made frenzied efforts to reach the street in the belief that an earthquake had occurred. In the rush many were knocked down and tramp- led on. ESCAPE WITHOUT INJURY. Four Hundred Persons Safely Get Out of Burning Building. Port Huron, Mich., May 81.—Just in the middle of the afternoon session of school, when the building was filled with 400 pupils and teachers, the Port Huron high school caught - fire. Despite the fact that hardly fifteen minutes elapsed between the first alarm and the falling in of the roof teachers and pupils all escaped without injury. There was no panic. Twaelve girls and women fainted and had to be carried to safety, but none were injured. DR. 'FORCE FOUND GUILTY. Minneapolis Man Convicted of Embez. zlement. Minneapolis, May 31—Dr, J. F. Force, formerly president of the Northwestern National Life Insurance company, has been found guilty of embezzlement. Sentence was deferred pending arguments on & motion for a new trial. The specific charge under which Dr. Force was convicted was the embezzlement of 135 shares of Metropolitan bank stock frem the Northwestern National Life Insurance company while he was president of the insurance company. The trial brought out- much sensational testi- mony. ‘ It took the jury more than five hours to reach an agreement, but only three ballots were required before the entire twelve were unanimous in their’ opinion that the former insurance offi- clal was guilty as charged in the in- dictment.
