The former date conflicted with the republi- can county conventions and would have meant that the best men in the state would have been unable to go to Wadena. The drainage convention on the twenty-sixth ought to be a sue- cess. The appelate division of the New York supreme court has de- cided that it is no crime to take $48,000 of the policyholders’ money and hand it over to a poli- tical party as a campaign fund contribution, just as a Minneap- olis jury has decided that an offi- cer has a right to take $5,000 of the policyholders’ money with which to bribe a state officer. St. Paul Dispatch, “The County Chairman:” There has been much talk and advice along the lines of uninstructed delega— tions to the Duluth convention, but honestly I am not in with the game. The chances for skul- duggery are too great. Better tie ’em down before they start for Duluth. There will be less chance for a scandal when the thing is over. This cry of unin- structed delegations began with the start of the campaign and it has been played for all there is in it. Back of it were interests that play politics for what there is in it and that is enough. Why, get into any bunch of politicians and the talk generally ruos to the good times that are dueat Duluth. The sentiment generally is that if.you have the coin the rest will be easy. Again I say better tie’em up. It will keep the big mitt men away.” Crookston Times: At last the catis out of the bag and itis practically confessed that A.G. Confession of the exact reasons for Mr. Bernard’s long stay in Washington is foundin a dis- patch to the Pioneer Press from Cass Lake telling of the rejec- tion of the offer of the forestry bureau to release 38,000 acres of the forest reserve adjacent to Cass Lake. The dispatch con- cludes: “The club also voted to notify its Washington represen- wative of the matter.” It is understood that it was the original intention of the pres- ident and secrstary of the drain- age league that both should go to Washington to lobby for drain- age and some $1,600 was prom- ised in anea.pohs and $1,000 in:| Duluth, but later Duluth recon- sidered its action and Minneapo- lis, which had already put up $400, refused to subscribe any more. The secretary of the league was therefore compelled to stay at home while the presi- dent, who could kill two birds with one stone, went alone. American Academy of Medicine _ June 2.4, 1906.
