In thissection of the country, at this time, it is perhaps expecting too much to ask for real good roads, but we can and must have better roads, Whether Taft did Wallace an injustice or notin “firing” him as soon as he learned he intended to resign as chief engineer of the Panama canal, the public would think more of Wallace now if he would keep still about it. His abuse of the secretary of war sounds too much like the holler of a man who tried to play a foxy game and got hurt. The memory of it will remain with them probably all their lives, and they will never regret the help they gave toward securing a proper memorial for this friendly old Indian after whom our city is named. Caleb Powers, who is charged with the murder of Governor Goebel of Kentucky, has been granted a ‘fourth trial, This famous case has been kept going from district court to supreme court and back again for several years, and promises tokeep it up for as many more years to come. The trouble is that Powers isa republican, and republicans and ‘“niggers’’ don’talways get a fair trial in Kentucky, or anywhere else in the south, for that mat- ter. Just what satisfaction some of the candidates for governor are getting out of the game is more than we can understand. Human nature may not be the same the world over, but most of the men we have known wouldn’t think they were having any fun.at-all if they were merely hanging around the edge of the crowd and watching the other fellows cap- They would be wanting either to put up some kind of a fight or pull out altogether. But that is their business. Bemidji gives promise of being a more popular summer resort this year than ever before. People over the state apparently are beginning to learn that we have here the prettiest spot in all Minnesota, with woods, fresh air, lakes, rivers, fishing, and everything that goes to make a summer resort ideal. The Pio- neer has received a number of letters within the last few days trom people who are anxious to get cottages here .this summer. To those who are thinkingof com.- ing we would say, come. Prominent English Women Suffragists Refuse to Pay Taxes. London, May 25—Mrs. Dora Monte- fiore, one of the leading woman suffra- gists, under whose lead many women have pledged themselves not to pay their taxes on the ground that taxa- tion without representation is tyranny, harangued a great crowd of women suffragists from the second story of her house near London. She roundly denounced Chancellor of the Excheq- uer Asquith as an assassin because he stood in the way of the advance of the women’s movement, and Chief Secre- tary for Ireland Brice and Captain John Sinclair, secretary for Scotland, were also bitterly assailed. Mrs. Mon- tefiore informed her hearers that the | women who were refusing to vay taxes were taking this course in order to advance the education of the cabi- net ministers and warned the latter of the determination of those who were conducting the campaign to ob- tain their indisputable rights. She asserted that the cabinet ministers who opposed the movement were marked men and suggested that her hearers break the windows of Mr. As- quith’s house. She would do so her- self, she declared, were it not for the fact that she was engaged in defend- ing her residence against tax collect- ors and others, BANK ROBBERS SUSPECTED.
