YEAR The Crookston Times suspects “that there is an Eddy in the stream of gubernatorial candi- dates.” A better pun than guess, | “Do as I say and not as I do,” is'the sage admonition of John L. Sullivan. But who ever heard of anyone following good advice; we follow examples, Duluth has so many candidates for sheriff that she has to keep the list in alphabetical order to keep track of them, Poor job up there in Duluth, eh? That girl who writes the Quentin column in the Minne- apolis Tribune is alright. She certainly is one of the best in the business, and is improving right along. The good stuff of today is the chestnut of tomorrow. You couldn’t drive the average man toread a column ot San Fran- cisco dope now at the point of a shotgun, The Duluth Herald suggests that pretty soon, maybe, the consumers will go on a strike against the repeated suspensions of industry for which they al- ways have to pay. The idea! With the opening of spring and the approach of Memorial Day it is fltting that we call the attention of the citizens of Be- midji to the condition of the cemetery and suggest that they tix up the graves of. their loved ones. J. D. Lunn of the Northland Produce company says his com pany comes to Bemidji because it believes it to be the logical wholesale distributing point of this section of the siate. So it is, and other concerns will be finding it out soon, Watch us grow. E. H. Winter & Co. is deserving of no little commendation for the public spirited interest it is showing in aiding the public library. Russell Sage has been reported “retired atlast” so many times that the latest announcement of his withdrawal from active busi ness is taken with a grain of salt. Still, it ought to be true if it is not, for the aged financier is in his ninetieth year. Pert para- graphers can take their shots at the old man all they please—and they have pleased to do so pretty often in the last twenty years or so— but there is more to admire in his life than in the lives of a score of other multi-millionaires, living and dead. He has been grouchy and penurious, but he has been clean and upright, and his charities, while they have not been flaunted in the face of the world, have not been few, The two Johns, John L. and John A., met in the capitol the other day and enjryed a pleasant visit, with the talking mostly by the former champion. There is something remarkably interest- ing about Sullivan in spite of his booze, his bowery manners and his perpetual flow of talk about himself and the old days—the present day is strickly punk, if John L., is to be believed. It seems almost iucreditablg, but the old fighter is almost as popu- lar with the sporting world today as he was when he was the king of them all, fifteen years and more ago. Perhaps it is because he is right and the present day is punk, and there are few true sportsmen following pugilism in these modern times. Whatever else he was and is, Sullivan has always been a true sportsman. PR R e MARKET QUOTATIONS. Minneagolis Wheat.
