President Roosevelt may yet be forced to take the presidential nomination to beat Bryan. “Of all the possible candidates boomed so far, there is not one with the proper vote getting qualities. The democrats are going to put up Bryan, at least everything points that way, and William J. is not going to be dis- ?| posed of as easily as .he was in 1900. One of the late bits of political gossip being most vigorously contradicted by Jacobson sup- porters mentions the real motive back of the Lac Qui Parle man’s candidacy for governor—not Jacobson’s motive, but that of his managers—as the embarrass- ment of Senator Nelson in his candidacy for re election. C. A. Smith, the Minneapolis Jumber. man, whose senatorial ambitions are of long years standing, is ;|credited with being the mar with the barrel in the campaign. o| The story runs that under cover of nominating Jacobson, the managers .are working to get men in the legislature who will &|vote for Smith as a Swede can- didate for senator. Jacobson is a Norwegian, as is Senator Nel- son, and it is figured out that if the former were governor, Smith would stand a hetter show. Value of County Seat. An interesting question as to the value of the county seattoa town is raised by Sauk Rapids, recently shorn of its honors, The Benton county village firmly be- lieves that the seat of government is a hoodo and freely admits that real prosperity never came until it lost the courthouse. One of Sauk Rapids’ leading business men sizes up the situa- tion in this fashion: We have grown ever since that blooming county seat went to Foley. This may sound curious, but it is a gospel truth. We were going down hill before that time, and the grass was growing on the streets, but since we lost that fight for ihe county seat, there has been one era of prosperity here. * * * * Sank Rapids today is one of the best business towns in"the state, and so help me, it started to be that when we lost the county seat. @] Foley is welccme to it. This surely is a new point of view. Most cities and villages are convinced that trade follows the courthouse and are willing to spend recklessly of their wealth to keep it, or to wrest it from a rival which already his it. County seat figh's are of almost monthly occarence 1n Minnesota. The reul cause of Sauk Rapids’ revival is doubtless not that it lost the county seat, but that it needed just some such blow to quicken it into life again. Having the county seat could not save the village as long as its citizens were dead. The county seat is usually an indication rather than 5 In and prestige.
