CINITY OF CRATER. Naples, April 11.—A frightful dis. mster has occurred in the center of this city, following the eruptions of Mount Vesuvius. Two hundred peo- ple, it is estimated, were buried in the ruins- of the Monte Oliveto market ° when the roof collapsed under the weight of cinders from the volcano. The exact number of people within the building at the moment of the tatastrophe is not known and the list bf fatalities is problematical. The disaster was appalling. The tourtyard covers 600 feet square and was roofed. The space within was tnusually orowded with buyers and their children, the accident happening t the hour of the day when trade is most brisk. Suddenly, with scarcely a tremor of warning, there was a terri- Jying crash, while shrieks of agony tent the air. The work of rescue progressed dur- Ing the morning hours and before noon 7 bodies had been recovered and 178 Injured persons extricated from the ruins, The identification of the bodies of R number of those killed by the col- lapse of the market roof has been lound te be impossible owing to thelr being absolutely unrecognizable, in sonte “cases being reduced to pulp, while others were horribly mutilated. Among the dead are many children, who had been sent by their_parents to do the morning’s marketing, and the grief of the parents as-the bodies of their children were found was heart- rending. The market itself is a mass of ruins. ol LOSS; OF LIFE INDEFINITE. e H’urmree ‘Bodiss . When the military carts arrived at the scene of the disaster at night the sol- liers .arranged to have the children md aged people get into the carts, but when the vehicles had gone a few F— hundred feet it was found that al- lhough there were four horses har- aessed to each wagon they could not pull their loads through the deep ashes’in spite of several desperate ef- lorts made to do so.
