He was born in 1834, FOR WOMEN ONLY. ‘There are good and substantial reasons whfi intelligent pe‘i}?l“ and phy: S as well, employ Dr. Pierce’s I'avorite Pre- scription for the cure of diseases and weakness peculiar to women. In the first place, it is not a cure-all, serving only a singleness of purpose, being a_specific for one class of diseases only —those peculiar weaknesses maladies incident to women. is the only medicine put up for through druggists for the cure of such maladies, all the ingredients of which have the endorsement of leading medical practitioners and writers, as being the very best known remedies_for the ail- ments for which "Favorite Prescription” is advigsed. All this will be learned to the reader’s full satisfaction by perusing a booklet of extracts compiled by Doctor Plerce from standard authorities of the seyeral schools of practice, and which will be sent free to any address on roquest for same, mailed to Dr. R. V. Pierce, Buffalo, N. Y. In the second place, Dr. Pierce’s Favor- ite Presciption is the only medicine for woman’s peculiar weaknesses and affec- tions, all ‘the ingredients of which are g;lnted upon the bottle wrapper in plain inglish, so that all who take it may know exactly what they are using. A further reason for the unprecedented pularity of the “ Favorite Prescrip- ion” of Dr. Pierce for the special use of ‘women, is to be found in the fact that it contains not a drop of alcohol— pure, triple-refined glycerine, of proper strength, being used " instead, both for extracting and preserving the medicinal principles extracted from such roots of native, medicinal, forest plants as are employed in its make-up. The printed formula will also bear witness that it contains no narcotics or other harmful or habit-forming drugs, bein; entirely made up of glyceric extracts of nagive, American plants of marvelous efficacy in the cureof the disoases pocu. liar to women. Now, in this connectio) bear in mind, th 1S it may seem, yet it is a fact that Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription is the only medi- cine for the cure of women’s peculiar weaknesses and maladies that does not contain alcohol and that too in large quantities. This fact can be easilly proven; and yet it is a fact well known to all the best physicians that aleohol, even in small quantities, when long continued is very harmful, and especially so to ’wcakhirwalid, nervous women. While the effect of spirituous wines and liquors, sold under various enticing names may at first be to exhilerate, brace-up and unduly support the system for a brief time, yet a reaction comes sooner or later and the patient is worse off than before. Besides, a craving for alcoholic stimu- lants has gradually fastened itself upon the poor, deluded, suffering woman—ga malady generally more to be dreaded than the original affliction. Furthermore, Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Pre- scription has a record of cures extend- Ing over a period exceeding one-third of & century and embracing more genuine cases of full and complete recovery than any other medicine in its line can boast of.” Thousands have been saved from the operating table and the surgeon’s knife by the use of this marvelously efficacious specific for woman’s ailments. Other thousands have escaped the disagrecable ordeal of the doctors’ questionings, and offensive examinations by taking this ramed{ and be(nf cured in the privacy of their homes. It has cured thousands of bad, obstinate cases in which doctors had fafled and in which cures were thought to be impossible. z ‘What it has done for others it will no doubt, Do FOR YOU, if similarly afflicted. and you give it & good, fair and faithful I:n'rl.vor of Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Pre- it is well to v frank, confiding open, honest statement of its full composition, giving every in- gredient in plain English, without fear 81 successtul criticisin and with confls dence that the good sense of afflicted women will lead them to appreciate this honorable manner of confiding to them what they are taking into their stomachs when making use of this medicine. If suffering from backache, sideache, periodical headaches and other recurring pains at more or less regular intervals, disagreeable drains as 1f from pelvic catarrh, sickening sensations, dizzines at times, monthly headaches, irregulari- ties. bearing-down or dragging-down sensations in the lower abdomen or any of the many kindred distressful and pain- ful symptoms which accompany female weaknesses, then you cannot find any remedy quite so perfectly adapted for tha cure of your malady as Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription. Bear in mind, it is not a secret nostrum, is not a patent medicine, to the use of which most intel- ligent people object because of the close secrecy with which the formulz of such medicines are held, and which, no doubt are many times harmful in the long run, especially as all those for women contain large quantities of aleohol and oft times other objectionable ingredients. The only wise ‘and safe course is to use only MEDICINES OF KNOWN COMPOSITION, and which. like Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Pre- seription, contain no alcohol or harmful habit-forming drugs. The exact proportion of the several ingredi- ents used in Dr. Pierce’s medicines, as well as the working formula and peculiar processes, apparatus and appliances employed in their manufacture, are withheld from publicity that Dy. Plerce’s proprietary rights may not De infringed and trespassed upon by unprin- cipled imitators and those who may be pirat- ically inclined. TFor weak stomachs and the consequent i= digestion or dyspepsia, and the multitude of various diseases which:result therefrom, no medicine can be better suited as a curative agent than Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Dis~ covery. The Golden Seal root, Stone Yoot, Mandrake root and Black Cherrybark, enter- ing into its composition are all recommended by such eminent authorities as Dr. Bartho- low. of Jefferson Medical College; Prof. John King, author of the “AMERIOAN DISPENSA- TORY”; Prof. John M. Scudder, late of Cin- cinnati; Dr. William Paine, author of Paine’s Epitomy of Medicine: Prof. Laurence John- sof. M. D.. Medical Dept.. University of N. Y.: Prof. Edwin M. Hale. M. D.. Professor of Materia Medica in the Hahnemann Med- ical College, Chicago, and many others, as remedies for indigestion and dyspepsia, tor= pid liver as well as bronchial, throat and Tung affections, as will be seen from reading a little booklet recently compiled by Dr. R. V. Pierce, of Buffalo, N. Y., who will send the same on request, by postal card or letter, tQ any address, frec. This little booklet tells of what Dr, Pierce’s celebrated medicines are made, and gives tWe-properties and uses of each and every ingredient entering into their co sition. Write Dr." Pierce, as above and receive it by returm post. Queen’s root, or Stillingla, is an ingredient entering into the “Golden’ Medical Discov- ery” highly recommended by several of the above mentioned guthorities for the cure of chronic_or lingering bronchial, throat and lung affections, public speaker’s sore throat attended with hoarseness, dry, rasping cough and kindred affections. Not only is Queen’s Toot specific in its curative action in all these affections, but in “Golden Medical Discov- ery " it is greatly assisted by the combina- tion with it of Golden Seal root, Stone root. Black Cherrybark and Bloodroot, with which it is blended in just the right proportion. Sick women are invited to consult Dr. Plerce, by letter, free. Thereby they avoid the disagreeable "questioning ' from which most women shrink as well as the still more repulsive examinations which are generally ‘unnecessary. 1 letters of consultation are regarfed as sacredly confidential. Add Dr. R. V. Plerce, Buffalo, N, Y. How to preserve health and beauty is told in Dr. Plerce's Common Sense Medical Ad- viser. It ig free. The promoters of .the Bemidji Bible conference are doing some good work in the way of advertis- ing the ideality of ‘Bemidji as a summer resort, they having in the past two weeks sent out 2,000 folders glving the city -and sur- rounding lake resorts a good boost. Now this kind of advertising is just what Bemidji needs, and is the advertising that has made our sister towns such favored resorts. Bemidji has better fa- cilities for caring for the parties seeking a summer’s rest than any of the surrounding places, being a better railroad 'center and having more natural advan- tages. By all means keep this kind of good work up. The promoters of this bible conference are doing a most com- mendable work in the way of ad- vertising Bemidji but they should not do it all and the citizens and the commercial club should take a hand in this work. We should all swing into line and advertise the beauties of the place to spend a vacation or summer. AvLvae EASTMAN of the St. Cloud Journal gave some good advice the other day when he said: Wouldn’t it be a good idea to nominate a winning candi- date for governor before too much political gore is spilled over congressional candi dates? There is pleaty of time between June 13 and September to select a man to represent us in Washington. And the position the congres- sional candidates take on the gubernatorial candidate may help them some. J, A. The Empresses of Russia. During the eighteenth century no less than four empresses held sway over Russia, and if perhaps the throne was unjustly usurped in more than one In- stance it can at least be said of all of them that they reigned move wisely than the emperors of ‘that period and that they have left names more famous than those of their male predecessors and successors. With all her many faults Catherine the Great proved a wise and powerful nionarch, and much that disfigured her history may be for- gotten, seeing that she almost totally abolished the custom of subjecting all Russian prisoners to a system of ghast- ly torture besides repealing many oth- er cruel and barbarous laws. Mars and Safurn. If Mars and Saturn reflect the same proportion of the light which falls upon their surfaces the smaller and much nearer planet would look three times as bright as the much more distant and much larger Saturn. As a matter’ of fact, there is no great difference be: tween the two. Itis inferred from this fact that the visible surface of Saturn consists of clouds, since no surface of land and water would reflect so much tight as that planet gives. The word “time" admlts of a very peculiar arrangement of its letters. The four lettes of the word transposed and read backward and. forward and up and down give four perfect English and Latin words. It is said to be the only word {n’our language that will ad- mit of so many transpositions and ar rangements. Note the oddity of the square below: TIME ITEM M-ETI EMIT The above words in English as well as In Latin are all complete, and the curious part of it is that reading them backward and forward and up and down gives the same result that trans- posing the letters in the original word does. Their signification as Latin words ;|18 as follows: Time, fear thou; item, llkewise; meti, to be measured; emit, he buys. Curions Facts About the Eve. A very curious fact is the impossibil- ity of moving your eye while examin- Ing the reflectlon of that organ In a mirror. It is really the most movable part of the face. Yet if you hold your bead fixed and try to move your eye ‘while watching it you cannot do it— even the one-thousandth of an Inch. Of course if you look at the retlection of the nose or any other part of your face your eye must move to see it. But the strange thing s that the moment you endeavor to perceive the motion the eye is fixed. This Is one of the reasons ‘Why a person’s expression as seen by himself in a glass is quite different from what it is when seen by others. —
