Yet this'is what was first claimed, and the peti- tion was presented to the public in that guise. It may be inquired where Crafts got his authority tc use the names of the Indians, and why he does not' produce his commission. The fact is, the | Indians did not sign this paper. It did not represent their views. They are not in favor of the con- fiscation of their lands. They repudiate this forgery. It is a matter of regret that ‘the commercial clubs of the twin cities were not honest enough, or brave enough, to repudiate this gross wrong. It ‘isa sad com- mentary that they still uphold this false petition, when they, in effect, confess that it is bogus.| It gives rise to a doubt as to their good faith. In the fubure’ documents emulating from them are likely to bescrutinized closely as to whether or not they are authentic.
