SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR Forestry and Farming. . FARIBAULT JOURNAL: The Duluth Herald has queer iceas as to what constituies an in- telligent, progressive farmer. In a cartoon it pictures sucha farmer trying to get into a forest reserve to locate a farm. It should know that the ‘‘progres- sive farmer” never wants for a farm the poor land which the government sets aside for forest reserves. He can do better else- where. Duluth Herald: That’s just the point. It is not poor land that has been set aside, but good land, land that ought to suppbdrt a great agricultural population instead of being devoted to the cultivation of trees and_ the per- wealth. i Minnesota | wants this particularly, but the whole state should be interested. | Those who lend their aid to the schemes of the forestry people, deceived by fraud, forgery and falsehood, are, consciously or unconsciously, doing a great in- jury to the state and its -people. The idea of The Herald’s|: cartoon, referred to by the Faribault Journal, was ncot that progressive farmers were trying to get int) a useless area set apart for forestiry, but thata most valuable area had been set apart for forestry when it should haye been thrown open to re¢- ceive the quickening labors of the progressive farmer. BEMID.IT CHINK Improves the flavor and addsto the health- fulness of the food. HAS HEARING Chinaman Claims He Has Lawful Right to Live in petuation of the wilderness in of harebrained ! theorists: . There i8 land in Northern Minnesota that is suitable for forestry experiments, and itis ___ | practically good for nothing else. If the forestry people would con: tent themselves with taking this land there would be no com: plaint from any souree. Very likely in the great area that has been tied up in forest reserves there is some more land that is fit only for raising 1rses, but the larger portion of it, according to those who have been over it, is excellent agri- cultural land. The comment gquoted aboveis an example of the deadly effect of the work of the forestry people, who have not hesitated, in the pursuit of their schemes, to slander Northern Minnesota by telling people thativ is unfit for agriculture. At one time| their schemes included prac- tically all of Northern Miunesota, but the advance of settlement stopped this plot. Then when tLe Chippewa reservations were thrown open they were succdss- ful in seizing. upon a great area in the heart.of them, and Yy un- truthfully declaring it to be unfit for agricultural purposes, having it set apart for forestry expgrl- ments. Minnesota wants all ‘of her arable land - settléd upon’ and tilled, that there may be wore people to share the burdens.of Special Election Notice. The:action of the «Associated; Building Trades:in ent union of stonecutters, hundreds of |3, ing construction, makes a number of walkouts practically certain. The excuse for the threatened strike is unusual. Its basis is the rivalry be- tween the two unions of stonecutters.
