Itstead of connecting with the Soo road at Thief River Fails, as has all along been supposed would be the case, 1t is now said that the extension of the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic road west from Duluth will connect with the Soo at Carrington, N. D. This would give Duluth direct rail connections with the Cana- dian northwest, besides giving Dakota another outlet to the head of the lakes. It is understood the extension will cross into North Dakota, at Belmont, and run through Traill, Steeie, Griggs counties, as far as Carrington, and as proof that the line really will be built is pointed out the fact that the Great Northern will and Foster | friends. build a new branch off the Fargo- Aneta line from Ayr, and west to Griggs county, where it will cross the Sheyenne river. This branch, itis supposed, will be built with the purpose of heading off the South Shore extension, or. as entering the new field as a rival, The above, which appears in the Grand Forks Herald today, is probably one of the many rail- road “rumors’’ that are circulat- ed throughout the country con- tinually, and it iswvery probable that there is no truth to the re- port unless the railway company has changed ifs mind very re- cently, as a number-of crews of surveyors bave been at work running lines north of this city between Duluth and Thief River Falls. The company has even gone so far as to ask contractors to bid for the construction work jon the Thief River Falls exten- | sion. SENT OBSCURE LETTERS IN MAILS Rev.
