STORE BURNED; OWNER IS HURT Disastrous Fire Occurred at Bena Tuesday Morning —Loss $20,000. Fire at Bena about 2:30 Tues- day morning destroyed the general store of Ernest Flemming and Mr. Flemming was lkadly injured while attempting to re- move some merchandise. He was in the warehouse in the rear of the store with a number of other men, when a keg of powder exploded. None of his companions were injured by the explosion and in the excitement did not notice Flemming’s injury, only learning of it when they found him lying unconscious on the floor, bleed- ing from nose, mouth and ears. They immediately carried him out and as soon as the extent of his injuries were realized, tele- graphed to Cass Lake for a special train and a physician, One Way Colonist Rates ! via Chicago Great Western Railway, To points . in Arkansas, Ken: tucky. Duluth, Feb. 2.—Criminal ac tion against the person who forged'the names of 380 Chip- pewa Indians to a petition ask- ling congress toallow the Morris t{law to remain as it stands, is to be instituted by the outraged reds of the reservations of north- ern Minnesota. With a_view to starting such prosecution the Indians from all over the reservations have ap- pointed a committee of five to communicate with United States District Attorney C. C. Haupt, { of St. Paul, asking 'his advice as to how to proceed. We were greatly astonished a short time ago to tind there was being circulated broadcast by the Commercial clubs of St. Paul and Minneapolis, a pamphlet, under the title ‘“Memorial and Appeal,’’ as an appendix to which appeared a copy of a preteaded petition having 380 Chippewa In- dian signers, among which names ours are included, asking congress to leave the Morris law just as il stands. The authorship of this forged petition has been positively de- termined, and this forgery grossly wisrepresents us to our damage, in that it operates to persuade congress not to grant us relief so that this property can besold. We have already lost over three years interest on the immense value of this prop- erty and the forger of this peti- tion has greatly damaged us in fraudulently = misrepresenting our wishes as to its disposal. We enclose herewith, as sub- stantiating the above statement, the following: 1st. Copy of affidavit of Rev. Charles Wright, showing how these names were secured by the person forging this petition. (In this connection we would| state that Secretary Nye of the public affairs committee of the Minneapolis Commercial club has stated through the public press that the petition and list of names was furnished by Dr. Crafts, of Minneapolis.) 2nd. You will note the certificates are ab- solutely identical, even to the omission of the word ‘‘they” by mistake on the original re-allot- ment petition. Does this not constitute for- gery under the Federal laws? What must we do to institute this presecution?
