Tiflis, Caucasia, Jan. 31.—The mur- der of General Griaznoff, chief of the staff of the viceroy of the Caucasus, Wwas most dramatic and audacious. The assassin evidently had studied the i habits of his victim and lay in wait . behiné a wall of the Alexander gar- den, opposite the entrance of the pal- , ace, where a carriage was drawn up I"to take the general for his daily drive. As all.suspicious persons are liable to be searched in the streets by the po- lice and military patrols the assassin impersonated a -painter, carrying the bomb with which he committed the j.crime concealed in a paint can. He was thus able to pass the sentry post- ed at the gates of the park and reached his place of ambush without arousing suspicions. General Griaz- noft, clad in a crimson uniform and white lamb’s wool shapka, or cap, worn by the viceroy’s aide-de-camp, made a skining target for the crouch- ing assassin when he emerged from the palace. As the general stepped into the carriage the man sprang on the wall, swung the can by a cord and the bomb, as if thrown from a sling, with marvelous precision sped straight to the mark and struck the general on the neck. A flash of fire and a terrible explosion followed and Griaznoff. was literally blown out of i the carriage and, with his coachman, | & Cossack orderly and the latter’s horse, was instantly killed. A lady who was passing at the time of the explosion was mortally wounded. RESENTS PREACHER’S REMARKS. Mob at Waverly, la., Gets After an Evangelist. Chicago, Jan. 21.—A dispatch to the Tribune from Waverly, Ia., says: An attempt to mob the Rev. French E. Oliver, a Chicago evangelist, for at- tacks upon the city’s morals and au- thorities was averted only by the unit- ed action of the regular ministers of the city. In his sermon Oliver made an attack upon the city administra- tion. Soon thereafter a mob of 200 proceeded to the church where Mr. Oliver was still speaking. The local ministers then hustled Oliver out of the church and wired to Governor Cummins for protection, but Sheriff Parrott succeeded in holding the crowd at bay. Famnus Army Scout Dead.
