J., Déc. 22—With- in plain sight of pedestrians on the board wilk a large vessel, believed to be an oll steamer, is afite at sea, the flames shooting high in the air. Al- though three lifesaving crews have gone to the steamer no news can be had. When the flames were the high- est a steamer passing down the coast was seen to make towards the burning boat. The lifesaving crews were en- couraged by this, as it was believed those on hoard could be taken off to a place of satety. Suddenly the steamer that was going to the rescue was no- ticed to turn and go in another direc- tion. As far as can be observed from the shore there is nobody on board the burning vessel and it is hoped the crew has escaped. Word has been received that the revenue cutter Mohawk has left New York to assist the vessel. The fishing smack Alberta has left here to pick up the crew if they can beé found. The lifesaving crews were handi- capped by a choppy sea on getting started. It is a long row out to the burning vessel, probably five miles Until one of the crews returns to the shore it will be absolutely impossible to give any news regarding the iden- tity of the unfortunate-vesset ami-tl fate of her crew.
